Does anyone else hate playing games at showers?

Yourlilfig, on April 14, 2016 at 6:06 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 27

I really hate playing games at these things. I have terrible social anxiety and it really makes me feel uncomfortable. That, and most are really corny. I'm invited to a baby shower next month and we're all supposed to bring a baby picture for a "fun game." Is there any graceful way not to participate, other than by not going?

You could forget to bring the photo, I guess.

I like the games. I usually print a copy of the registry and bring it with me in case we play bingo.

I love games also ! As long as it's not too corny. Like the candy bar diaper game at a baby shower of the toilet paper wedding gown at a bridal shower.

Bring the photo and gauge how you feel. If you don't want to play say you forgot the picture but enjoy watching (if it's necessary to mention it at all). My mom hates shower games so the last time we were at a bridal shower with a toilet paper dress contest, she took the "advising role" by drinking beer and watching our team wrap some stranger in toilet paper. Honestly, I can't remember a time I've seen every guest participate with shower games. Hopefully you wouldn't be forced to participate.

I personally love playing games because I'm a very competitive person.

I also love the games. Makes it fun. I went to a bridal shower last year that had about 80 people there. Way too many for a shower. No games. We just sat and watch her open gifts for over an hour. Boring.

I prefer the games because otherwise I'm forced into conversation with other people without guidance...

My opinion on baby or wedding showers is simple: games don't improve them. If it's cake, games, and a dry event, they are a little boring...sorry. What makes a shower great is using the occasion as an excuse to have a great party. If the guests are all unacquainted/unrelated, I guess you'd need something to fill two hours of uncomfortable silence, and I guess two hours of cake, coffee, games, and gifts are tolerable, but who wants a shower that's just tolerable? If you invite cousins and other family members, put out the alcohol and apps, keep the structured activities to a minimum, and require everyone's undivided attention only during the opening of the gifts, everyone will probably have a good time. After the gifts are opened, invite all the males spouses and SO's to crash the shower, keep the party going, and your shower will go down in history as a great party.

Or, play games and eat cake.

They can be awkward. I think most of them are totally optional unless the hosts are jerks and force people to play. I would just forget your baby photo and sit back and watch the game. If people ask, just say that you would rather just watch.

I love games at showers because it keeps me from having to make small talk with strangers. I am very bad at small talk. To me sitting next to someone and trying to make small talk or not talking is waaaaaaay worse than participating in a game and fading into the background.

I went to a baby shower without games. All i did was sit and talk to the person next to me. And then you have that awkward moment where you have nothing to talk about. How many times can you ask what do you do for a living? I wish they had games.

Baby shower games are the worst. No, I do not want to sniff that diaper and guess what the "poop" is. What the fuck. Seriously.

They're the worst. Also, those toilet paper dress games are such a waste of perfectly good toilet paper.
