Does anyone else dislike flowers?

Tiffany, on May 17, 2015 at 11:40 AM Posted in Planning 0 16

I'm not a particularly "floral" girl. I've never been good at keeping plants alive and I think that has made me kind of standoffish to all flowers. They're pretty and all, but I'm okay if they just stay outside.

Is it absolutely necessary to have flowers at the wedding? Is anyone else on here not having flowers? I don't even know how to talk to a florist about the little flowers I do want? Are there alternatives to a florist?

I'm pretty crafty, so I've thought of buying bulk flowers and making the bouquets... is that hard?

I don't really like flowers either. The only flowers I had were the bouquets. I didn't even use boutonnieres for the guys. I think they are a waste of money.

No. I adore them. They're no more a waste of money than great food or a candy bar.

    @Melissa

Did you get your bouquets from a florist? I'm planning on just bouquets also, probably no boutonnieres unless FH really really wants them.

Yes, I got them from a florist just because I didn't want to have to worry about picking up flowers from a grocery store and putting them together the day of the wedding.

I made paper flowers out of books for my bouquet, but my FH loooooooves flowers but doesn't want to pay, so he has started to cultivate pots of wildflowers all over the porch to use at the wedding. It will definitely work for a backyard wedding like ours, but maybe not for anything more formal.

I'm not really big on flowers either. I think it's weird that just because I'm getting married suddenly people expect that I'm going to be absolutely in love with some flower type for the centerpieces and want to be surrounded by some perfectly placed botanical garden. They're pretty and all, but not where I prefer to spend my money.

I'm thinking about doing dried flower or lavender and wheat bouquets. Or maybe throwing in just a few fresh flowers with some tall mint sprigs. And for centerpieces I'll stick with "things" and candles. Maybe a few books or a small bronze statue. Cost will probably still be comparative to a florist, but it will be on keepable/reusable things.

There are plenty of brides on here who DIY'ed bouquets that have come out great.

@megan I agree, I'm having a fall theme, so centerpieces will probably be pumkins or leaves and acorns definitely not flowers. It is so silly that suddenly people want to know my favorite flower and I'm like... "uhh fake ones, that wont die?"

I'm not really a flower person either. They're pretty to look at, but that's about as far as it goes for me. We are only doing bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages. Our centerpieces will be non-floral. I'm not even a fan of flowers for gifts. I would much rather a pair of shoes :-)

My fiancé and I are in the same boat. I'm not big on flowers either and find spending 1000+ on flowers that I'm barely going to remember and are going to die is pointless to us . I'd rather use that money for something else we really want. My venue supplies centerpieces. We're getting married outside and it's nicely landscaped ( if it rains we'll deal with what we have for the inside ceremony) so I'm only looking for the bouquets and bouts.

I hate flowers and am not having any in my wedding. Both FH and I are allergic to pollen so it made it 10 times easier for me to stick to my beach theme. Im doin seashell bouquets and boutineres and have a fake flower bouqette to toss. Centerpieces will be DIY and made of candles and seas shells. If you don't want want them don't have them! Are you having a themed wedding? A friend of mine had a carnival theme and had ferris wheels as her centerpieces with votif candles around. It looked so awesome. It may be easier to come up with non floral arrangements if you have a theme.

Thanks, @Tiffany! I was able to get a bunch of destroyed dictionaries from work (I'm an English teacher) and it's been fun to repurpose them!

@lilbit8915 our theme is "a fall fairy tale" leaves and acowns and pumpkins will probably be center pieces maybe I could incorporate that I to my "bouquets" thanks!

@moonride were doing so many unique things I always kinda thought it was an unbreakable rule to have flowers, but FH will love the idea of breaking another tradition. I know it's silly, but I honestly didn't even think of it that way.

The only flowers I had were the bouquets and boutonnieres. While I won't say it's a waste of money, it definitely wasn't a priority for us.

I'm not even going to have a floral bouquet - I'm going to test run it of course, but I want to use ferns/leafy greens/baby's breath/queen anne's lace and make one. I think my fiancé is leaning towards having pocket squares instead of boutonnieres. And I will probably put a small potted plant on the tables and then just have people take them home afterward because I kill everything. Not going to have flowers in the pots - more likely succulents and small cactuses that we sell at a great price at my workplace.

I like flowers but know NOTHING about them and could totally live without them. I bought lanterns for centerpieces and a friend is making me a fake bouquet.
