Do you tip at all-inclusive resorts?

Kayse, on June 14, 2020 at 3:15 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 6

They say that all gratuities are included, but when I've gone in the past, I've always taken cash and tipped drivers, waiters, and cleaning staff. I haven't been to an all-inclusive in about five years, so I'm just curious if that's what other people who go to all-inclusives do or if I should be taking the "gratuities included" thing more literally.

That's a good question. I'm going for the first time ever and I just would have taken that literally as if they made the calculations already based on how long you would stay and/or what kind of room you get. I'm sure even then they wouldn't be opposed to it. I guess you can still take cash with you and try.

I think it depends on the resort. We went to one in Jamaica last year, and the staff told us they could get in trouble for taking tips. This was at a Sandals/Beaches resort, so potentially other companies have more lenient policies. It probably doesn't hurt to offer though if you wanted to tip more, and they can always decline. I'm sure the gesture would be very appreciated even if they can't take it.

My first all-inclusive was a Sandals in Jamaica, and I don't remember tipping, but all six times I've gone to Mexico I've taken cash and it's been accepted and seemingly appreciated.

Sandals expressly forbids tipping. However, it is a common practice at other all inclusive resorts. I've also heard of people finding ways to tip staff at Sandals, but I can't speak to that directly since I haven't been to a Sandals resort. We usually take about $200 in singles when we go for a week and tip everyone a few dollars. When we go to the beach/pool, we'll usually tip like $10 when we get our first drink order (regardless of if it's water or something else) so we don't have to worry about fumbling for more cash when we get something else. Even though these jobs technically pay well compared to some other jobs in the country, they still do not make very much, so I feel like every little bit helps. And while they give great service in general, I notice that they are extra attentive to us after we tip. This is based off my experience at several resort chains in Mexico and the Dominican Republic over the years (Excellence, Secrets, Royalton, Hard Rock).

I've been to quite a few all-inclusives and going to another one in October. Tipping is not required but very much appreciated. We always tip everyone there and the service is always great. Smiley smile

Thanks everyone. I've mostly gone to Secrets resorts, and that's where I'm going next month. I will continue my practice of taking cash and tipping. Good idea to tip upfront!
