Do you really have to buy your dress 9 months in advance?

Amanda, on April 15, 2016 at 11:25 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 51

I'm not ready to go dress shopping yet. I want to lose some weight first, but it's 9 months until my wedding. I'm also one of those people that will forget what I liked about something and regret or second guess my decisions if I make them too far in advance. I got an email saying it's time to begin shopping, but I don't want to start yet. Has anyone ordered their dress later than that and still had enough time for alterations and fittings?

Well you need about 1-2 months for alterations and time to come in depends on the designer. Mine too about 6 months from when I purchased it.

Mine only took 3 months to come in - my sister's took 6 months. Her salon ordered a size too big, and she had to go in for alterations multiple times. (To an independent seamstress - she wouldn't give another dime to the store).

I bought mine about 9 months ahead but it took 5 months for it to come in.

ETA: Plus I needed alterations which took another 6 weeks. Luckily I only needed alterations once. Sometimes people have to have alterations done twice.

I ordered mine in October and it doesn't come until this wednesday. Ugh. Hopefully I don't need any alterations because it was made to order...

I bought mine and I don't get it til July then I need to get it altered. The sooner the better. But it also depends where you buy it. If you lose weight they can take it in

It depends on how long it takes to come in and whether you'll need alterations once it arrives. And then the alterations could take long or not, depending on the type of dress.

You can start looking now, and ask the bridal salon if the dress or dresses that you liked take long to ship. If you buy a sample dress, for example, then you don't need to wait for it to come in, and can have it altered whenever you're ready.

I think a lot of it depends on what dress you want and how many alterations you think you might need. I got my dress in about a month but I'm not doing any alterations. Maybe start off by calling places and figuring out what their turn around time is for the various dresses. Then you will see if you need to start looking or if you still have time. I got engaged in January and my wedding is in June so that is less than 6 months. Good luck! =)

I bought mine 4 months out. I didn't have to wait for it to come in because I left with it the day I tried it on. It was a discontinued dress and it was either take the sample or find another dress. It fit me perfect off the rack so I took it. Most of the time I think it's pretty standard to get your dress around 6 months out I think.

Typical time line for buying a dress is it takes 9-6 months so they have enough time to order it and then alterations take about 1-2 months

I ordered mine last week. They said it was in stock with the designer but it won't come until the end of July. I'm getting married September 25 and they said the fitting/alterations will be done in August.

I say if you can why not? There's no sense in waiting around and hoping it all works out in time. Some dresses really do take 6 months to come in. Mine took 3. Always add 1-2 months on top of that for alterations.
