Do we pay for Valet fee?

MJH0321, on June 5, 2017 at 9:37 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

I went to finalize everything at the resort for my Destination wedding and when I asked about parking they informed us that it is a valet only resort and its $15 per car. No where has this been mentioned to me prior and I didn't budget for it in our wedding. We are having a smaller intimate ceremony with 35 people so it wouldn't be an issue with us telling them about the fee or should we cover it?

35 people = how many cars? I assume everyone is not driving solo so it won't cost $525.

$15 isn't the end of the world and it depends what you are used to. But I would try to cover it if this is something you did not anticipate.

You should be covering any parking fees associated with your event. You are looking at maybe another $300 to cover. People will carpool so you wouldn't be paying for 35 cars

We are paying for the valet at our ceremony site. It's not a destination wedding, but just thought it's what we're supposed to do. Of course they told us the cost from the beginning, so we had to fit that in.

We were offered the option to have valet parking (there is plenty of free parking there but valet seems

More white glove). We turned it done because we didn't want the extra expense. I would say if that is all there is and people aren't staying there then it would be appropriate to pay for it.

I think you are supposed to cover it. I would try to negotiate with the vendor though because they should have told you about this ahead of time.

Yes you should cover it. You wouldn't ask your guests to pay to park if they came over dinner. This is the same thing.

We are covering it for our guests. This is a tricky one though. I don't know how you would handle it for a destination wedding. I feel like it's your responsibility to cover it only during the evening of your wedding/reception. If guests elect to stay multiple nights, I don't think you should have to pay those additional nights.

I have never heard of a "Valet Fee". People tip the valet whatever they feel is appropriate. This sounds like another way to rip people off.

    Agree with Future Mrs. above.

Weddings in my area usually have a built in valet fee that is covered by the bride and groom, if not I would cover it.

I drove several hours out of state to a cousin's wedding years ago, payed for all the gas and tolls, and I still remember feeling annoyed that they couldn't even cover $10 parking.

    @Nancy

Where do you live? Every valet I have seen has a fee, plus you are expected to tip the driver. That's why I avoid them as much as possible. The fees run from $20-40 at upscale hotels in big cities.

@kirackle I live in Southern California. We had valet parking at The Spaghetti Factory in Newport. Tipped the guy 5 bux.

I also live in Cali, and most places the valet is free and you just pay the valet what you wish.

@Nancy totally different at a hotel and restaurant. Hotels are normally $25 to park overnight where I live (and even more if you opt for the valet).

ETA: I would pay for your guest's valet if they are travelling to the hotel from another location. If they are all staying at that resort, I think you are ok not to cover it.
