Technically, all gentlemen present wear the same thing: formal morning dress for formal morning weddings, formal evening dress (commonly called "tuxes") for formal evening weddings, dark suits for less formal weddings. So, if tuxes are appropriate for the groomsmen, they are also appropriate for your ushers.

The most traditional morning dress, evening dress, and suits are black, midnight blue, and darck charcoal grey -- all of which are close enough to matching that gentlemen who own their own can quite properly wear that rather than renting. The groom should provide them with matching ties and pocket squares (and gloves if they are super formal), and the bride should provide them with boutonniers, which are the things that really do need to match. It is very common for the groomsmen to serve as ushers, seating guests until just before the ceremony, and then join the groom at the front of the congregation to wait for the bride's entrance. Obviously in this case the ushers wear the same coloured ties and pocket-squares as the groomsmen, because they are the groomsmen.

I would never ask an usher to shell out $150 for a rental. Maybe ask that they wear a "dark suit" and buy them ties in the wedding colors?

The vest without a jacket might be a good idea. and our ushers arent our groomsmen we already have those and we have the ushers to incude other people for our special day we have like 5 groomsmen and 4 ushers, 2 ushers for each side.

Men's Wearhouse will try to convince you that ushers should be in tuxes. I think that if they're in dark suits, they are totally fine.

We were told they should match the groomsmen just in case someone gets sick, the Usher can step in in their place. But It's your wedding, do what you prefer. I may never get to see my brother in a tux again so i'm taking advantage!
