Do Moms still give, and do Brides still wear "penquior sets"?

Some of you may not even know what I'm talking about. But, back in the cold dark ages of y1979; when a young woman got married it was tradition that her Mom giver her a penquior (?sp) set at her shower. It's basically a high quality and sexy chemis or nightgown of some sort with the matching robe and slippers. It would be white, cream, icy blue or a pale pink. Nothing to garish. I see less and less of them around and haven't seen one given out as a gift.

But, now my daughter is getting married and I know she'll have at least one shower. Am I going to be laughed at if I do this? Is it no longer cool to get one? Most couples live together now so it's not like there is this grand entrance to the wedding night. Most couples tell me they just go to sleep. Between the after parties and breakfast the next day. They are just exhausted.

Please, as brides to be....give me your opinions!

My mother gave me one at my first wedding in pale pink with a matching robe. I still have it and cherish it. I have not mentioned it to her but it would mean the world to me if she blessed this marriage in the same way.

@EricaTX that made me laugh out loud. I would probably find it awkward getting lingerie from my FMIL but that is a good tactic on her part!

OP, I think you should go for it, keep the tradition alive!

My mom gave me a set either on my wedding day or the day before, in private. It looked kind of like what Kris10 posted, but came about to my mid-calf, white with blue flowers on it. I didn't know it was a tradition beyond my family, my mom just told me that my grandmother got her one when she got married and she wanted to do it, so she got me one as well. I'm not sure I'd even consider it lingerie, it's just more of a beautiful, adult nightgown. It's kind of a nice tradition though.

Thanks for all of you responding and sharing your experiences!!! I will give her one. Or what passes as a pegnior set these days. And maybe a few other pretty pieces of lingerie for her honeymoon. I feel nothing embarrassed at all. Were really close and talk about "stuff" all the time. Thankfully that's how it was for me with my dear Mom..

Who else, if not your Mom would you want giving you those intimate things? I'm not talking crotchless panties here.....I mean delicate and sensual lingerie shell have for years.

    Thanks again.

I think it would be a lovely and special gift, with the purpose and story shared before hand in a card that the bride must read allowed and maybe some sentimental thoughts from the mother. My mother had one, but the day before her wedding day, her best friends, as a popular joke at the time in the 50’s was, they sewed up her nightgown with long strokes of thread, easily to cut apart. My mom remembered discovering this just before they set out for their honeymoon. Young and naive it rather upset her for a bit until her sisters could calm her down that it was just a joke. She just told me this story and to this day I don’t think my mom got the joke why they sewed them together, but it was due to the quick anticipation of the groom excited to consummate the marriage would make them slow down and have a laugh and or make it much harder for him the get the clothes off. lol
