Do I really NEED the "Something old, new, borrowed, & blue"

Caitie, on January 31, 2015 at 3:02 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

And a penny in my shoe? (Especially that one.)

I'm wearing my mom's veil, so that's something old, and my dress and shoes are new. But I have no idea what to do for borrowed or blue (my colors are blush and gold). I was also told that your something borrowed had to be from a friend. Is it necessary? I'm feeling superstitious all of the sudden.

That's all it is... a superstition. Something old represents continuity; something new offers optimism for the future; something borrowed symbolizes borrowed happiness; something blue stands for purity, love, and fidelity. It's completely up to you if it's gonna add that much more stress to have to find something borrowed or blue then I personally wouldn't worry about it but if you want to for the sake of following "the norm" add something small like a blue jewel or wear blue panties...lol technically the veil is something old and borrowed!!

    P.S I love your colors!

P.SS Those are my colors too!!

This actually crossed my mind the other day. I have a new dress, a blue sash (one of my colors), something old (unintentionally) is my Grandpa's flight wings in my bouquet (since he and my Grandma have both passed away). But I don't have anything borrowed. And then I giggled, and realized how awkward it would be to go up to my friend and be like "QUICK! LEND ME YOUR UNDERWEAR!" And that was the last of my worry over the matter. Though, it would be pretty hilarious to see the look on her face.

Nope. You only NEED a partner and a marriage license and an officiant. The rest is just fluff and fun.

@Andi that's funny.. I'm wearing blue panties, borrowed tiara, new dress, still working on the old. I don't want to tempt fate, so I'll go with the flow.

Blue panties are a good idea! It's a way to not break tradition without having to show off your blue. Now I just need something borrowed...

Those are my colors as well

    I'm doing something new- dress

Borrowed and blue- a heart shaped pin from FHs late cousin who wore it on her wedding say that's blue and goes inside the dress- I'll have to give it back to another cousin who inherited it

It may be my old too

You can also sew a little blue bow into your garter if you plan to wear one. Borrowed- a piece of jewelry? A hanky (if someone has a nice one)? Something to put into your bouquet like a pendant?

@hklo my mom has a pearl necklace that I've been thinking about borrowing bc all my BMs and my FGs are wearing pearls. They're also on my veil and on the centerpieces and around my bouquet... kind of a theme so it would be nice to wear some. But I heard that your something borrowed had to be borrowed from a friend because it symbolizes that you will take those friendships into marriage with you.

Definitely don't have to, but I think it's a fun tradition! I got a white and blue garter as my something blue.

It really is just an old saying, but can be fun anyway.

I am doing an old pair of shoes, new dress, and blue garter. Still working on the borrowed bit though...

In the list of things I have to worry about, this is not anywhere near the top. I think it's fun though, so if it's something you want to focus on have fun with it!

No, it's not necessary-- all you 'need' is an officiant and two people who want to get married and a wedding license. Please ignore superstition if it isn't adding to your enjoyment-- what makes a marriage work is mutual commitment, a sense of humor, and good communication, and I've never heard a little wedding poem about that.

My shoes are blue, I would think the ring could be considered something old lol. Dress is new and I don't know if anything is being borrowed.

You can do what ever you want. The old saying is just that, an old saying. I personally am doing this. I borrowed a bracelet from a friend, new is my dress, blue are the "I DO" stickers on the bottom of my shoes, and I bought a lucky sixpense for my shoe. I was missing something old. My mom, dad, and brother have all passed away so I asked my grandma, who is walking me down the aisle, if she could think of something old. She quickly replied to me, "I'm 81! How much older do you need?" I love her with all my heart and soul!! What ever you decide to do I wish you happiness and many blessings!!
