Do I really need a bustle?

abegaile, on October 28, 2016 at 2:52 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 31

I finally got my wedding dress in hand on Saturday! I won't be starting alterations until probably late February, but I am looking for opinions on bustles. My dress doesn't have a large train, and it won't be getting hemmed since I'm tall. In the picture below I'm standing on the little podium thing at the shop, so it's raised a little bit. Has anyone gone without a bustle? Is that a horrible idea?

Can you add a wristlet to the bottom where you can hold it up as you walk? Mine had that, as well as a decent sized train, and when it wasn't bustled the wristlet really helped keep my dress from snagging and dragging through stuff.

I think it'll bug you if it's dragging on the floor all night. Just a little bustle will be nice.

100% bustle especially if you are planning to dance.

I would definitely bustle it. You'll be stepped on all night even though it's short. Mine was bustlebustled and I still got stepped on.

It is hard to tell on my computer but I would say with that type fabric and the length not being very long you might do the wristlet like Mrs. Sasswood suggested.

I got a bustle & never used it!!! My train was 2-3 feet long. We were having such a good time we completely forgot about. Mom remembered it about half way through the reception & by that point it was like screw it. If I were to do it over again I'd do a. Wristlets bustle

I opted out of a bustle, but only because I'm not having a dancing/party reception, just a formal dinner. I don't like the look, and my train is not long, so it wasn't worth it to me.

Are you against a bustle? I don't mind the look of a French bustle, and it would look nice on your fuller skirt, so you could consider that.

So... when I had alterations done and I decided on which bustle I was super excited about it. I had her do a 13 point bustle at $15 each ($195). Fast forward to wedding day… I didn’t want to leave our reception for even 10 minutes so I ended up not bustling my dress. Our wedding was outside and it is pretty dirty but it never bothered me… ok, wasting $195 bothers me now that I am thinking about it.

@SoonToBe.MrsP- I think bustles look goofy. I have always thought they look like something is falling out of your butt (no offence to anyone who has one!)

I like the wrist bracelet idea!

I'm not worried about it getting dirty, it will have to be dry cleaned after either way, so I would rather just enjoy the day. Plus we are getting married next to one of our favorite hiking trails, so I might end up on the trail to take pictures. It will be getting a little dirty no matter what.

I'm also not a big fan of how bustles look, so I asked my seamstress to hem my dress so I wouldn't have to deal with it. She left me a small train, which worked out perfectly. I danced all night without issue; it definitely ended up dirty at the end of the night but that didn't bother me.

I don't have a great picture from the back, but it looked something like this.

Either my bustle broke or my MOH could not figure out how it worked. It kept coming undone, which was more annoying than not having a bustle. I carried my train everywhere and honestly it didn't bug me as much as I thought it was going to. Very few people stepped on it and it wasn't a huge deal. My dress was heavy too. Not sure how heavy yours is, but it looks light.

@AnewH My dress is not heavy at all. Most of it is charmeuse, with some tulle.

I can't imagine how annoying it would be to have to fuss with that! My poor MOH already has her work cut out for her with all the buttons on the back of my dress.

People will step on your hem and it will get filthy! Even if you are getting married inside.

People will step on it even if it is small. If you don't want a full bustle you can add a wrist strap and that will help

Definitely bustle! I saw a dress get torn because it had been stepped on so many times
