Do I Need To Rent A Dance Floor?

Lala, on August 31, 2016 at 1:00 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

My FH and I are currently debating whether we need to rent a wooden dance floor to put over the cement dance floor currently in place. Pros are aesthetics and a smoother surface for people to dance (though the cement is not bad). Cons are cost and the potential for slippage (the wedding coordinator said that she has seen several old ladies slip and fall on rented dance floors at this venue). This is a 22X22 cement slab. We would probably rent a 12x16 wood floor for 60 guests of we went with it.

Here is a closer look. Didn't see any major cracks or holes for stilettos to fall through. Most of my guests plan on wearing wedges. The main issue is aesthetics, which hopefully up lighting will cover up? My friend is also recommending that I draw stencil designs with chalk, but not sure I have time for that.

I think the cement is fine to dance on. In thinking of times that I've danced on cement (i.e., block parties and such) I can't remember any issues I've had. I also don't think it is that aesthetically off putting, especially when you have the area decorated.

We got wooden dance floor but with no drinks on the dance floor rule. The DJ will announce it. Spilled drinks is the main reason people slip.

Cement floor looks fine too but I like wooden ones.

Here is one more pic of the dancing area for kicks! The canopy will be gone and there will be a large event tent over the area for the reception

I would do wooden because you can't really spin or twirl on cement! I'm not a big dancer but feel like some things would be limited on cement.

As long as the dance floor is defined, people will dance, and none of them will be looking down saying "Ugh, cement? Why isn't this wood?"

I don't think it looks bad at all, and once you have the area decorated and uplighting in place, probably no one will notice one way or the other. I'd also have concerns about placing a portable "floating" floor over what's already there - that's creating an edge for people to trip over, plus your coordinator has already mentioned several incidents of people slipping. If the only reason to consider this is aesthetic, save some money and use what's there.

    Just my two cents. :-)

Yes. Unless it's a fortune, do it.

@zaz the edges are also something I'm worried about as well, since the wooden dance floor is smaller than the cement block. Also still trying to see if 12x16 is large enough for 60 guests!

Oooo thanks for this. I guess I could even go smaller but I'll just stick with the 12x16. Alternatively if I stick with the 22x22 cement dance floor my guests will have a lot of space!

Sorry about the post bump, but with this cement dance floor will I need to worry about the bottom of my dress getting dirty during first dance and the father/daughter dance? My dress has no train.
