Do i need a bustle on my dress?

Catherine, on December 21, 2017 at 1:46 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17
I’m getting married in two weeks and now freaking out because my dress has a train but no bustle. Do I need one? Literally having a panic attack about this dress. Or maybe just the wedding in general. Everything is wrong lol (even though I know it’s all what I wanted and will be great!)

It depends on the length of your train but often yes. I trip constantly so it was important for me

Honestly if it has a train you will want to have a bustle done and you will thank yourself for it. Guests could step on it and it's uncomfortable having to keep carrying it or trying to figure out how to get it out of the way. Learned it from my first marriage.

I'm extremely clumsy so it would be a must for me.

I don’t think it would take very long for a seamstress to add a bustle.. but yes it’s important so you don’t trip or trip anyone

I agree with PP to give you a piece of mind see if your seamstress can add a bustle.

This is definitely not something I would DIY. Call all well-reviewed seamstresses in your area that handle wedding dresses. It doesn’t take long IF you have a lot of experience, but it can go horribly wrong if you don’t.

You should probably get a train. At this point they might charge you rush delivery because you are giving them 2 weeks and we are in the holiday season. Luckily, bustles are relatively simple and not time consuming (depending on the kind you get). I personally would not have attempted it myself but if it was the only alteration I was having done to my dress I may have considered my mom and sister help me with it.

Do you have any pics of the train? Or know how long it is? Like the PPs said, it's probably be best to get a bustle just in case. I've heard some brides say that they didn't mind carrying their train all night and others say that a bustle was a must have.

I think you have plenty of time to get it altered. Just call around, post on your local bridal group asking for suggestions and let them know you need a quick turn around. You definitely don't want to be sewing a bustle into your own dress unless you're an experienced seamstress.

My grandmother did my sisters dress the day before the wedding, it turned out perfect! She does a lot of sewing projects though. I’d see if someone you know is good with a needle before you tried it. Unless you are good with a needle, then go for it! It wasn’t (didn’t seem to be) too hard to do. I watched and it looked like something I (who does not sew.. ever) could of done easily.

Im guessing it depends on the type of dress though. Hers didn’t have lace, so it was easier.

A bustle is absolutely essential if you have a train on your dress. But no need to panic, it's standard to have one, and any seamstress with bridal experience can do it for you. Do not try to attempt this yourself, you have no idea how involved they are.

A lot of tailors near me are taking off for the holidays. I should have asked when I got my dress altered but I totally forgot. Thank you all! I’ll put the dress on tonight and see what’s going on. The train isn’t ridiculous but it is there.

Even if you get a bustle, it's worth looking into large safety pins (as in, the kind used to pin blankets & kilts, a normal one won't do). Many bustles break throughout the evening, mine included, and having them on hand was a lifesaver. Ordered them from Amazon.

A bustle is always a good idea. It makes it easier to walk and move after the ceremony.

Do NOT do this yourself. You could wreck the dress. I'm sure not every single tailor is off for the next two weeks. Call around. Call bridal stores if you need to.

My mom and I looked at the dress again tonight and decided to not add a bustle to it. If we change our minds, my aunt, who is a very talented and wonder seamstress said she would when she comes up a few days before the wedding. Thank you all for your input!
