Do i Invite Narcissistic Grandmother?

Melissa, on September 18, 2019 at 11:07 AM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 4
Hello,

I'll try to keep this short. I love my grandmother, she basically helped raise me, I would like to have her at my wedding om the condition she behaves, but do I take that risk?

She is very religious, has dementia, and lives with my aunt. Every family event at some point ends up being about her, but I'm used to this and can minimize it.

Somewhere along the line she has decided I'm of the devil. This has upset my aunt so much that my aunt disowned me but not before calling me a slew of nasty insults. My grandmother is thoroughly convinced that I am terrible but says she loves me anyway. Weird but okay.

My parents hate my aunt and grandmother. There were many family events ruined by an argument with my grandmother and aunt. If my grandmother were to show up, she's not being seated near my parents. She's not the kind to always start an argument but she definitely digs the knife in regardless.

My POV is that my grandmother is my grandmother, she's my last living grandparent, and she did help raise me. She's been mostly nice to me at things like proms in the past. She behaved at a cousin's wedding a few years ago so maybe she'll behave at mine? Of course the cousin was of the same religion and I'm not so I'm not certain. She actively hates my parents as well.

However...if not being invited were to upset my grandmother and then she were to die angry at me, I dont know if I could live with that. Dramatic? Maybe. But I have a few regrets about loved ones that have died in the past and I don't want to add more. The aunt isn't invited so she's not relevant as long as she doesn't show up uninvited.

Thoughts on this mess?

I would just ask yourself this: "Do I want to have a relationship with my grandmother?"

I hate how nasty she and your aunt have been to you, but if you really don't want to lose that relationship (especially given that she's getting older) I would invite her to the wedding. If you don't invite her, that will almost certainly end what's left of the relationship you have with her.

Don't make this decision based on your aunt or your parents, just on you and your feelings about your grandmother. If you do invite her, I would try to patch things up the best you can before the day off so you won't have that stress on your shoulders.

I'm sorry to hear about your struggles. Does she live with a live in nurse or caregiver or anything like that? If so, maybe you could hire them for the day. That way your grandmother is more comfortable and has someone to help keep her in check.

Unfortunately things change when people have Dementia because they can’t control what they say and do anymore. If you invite her you have to be prepared for outbursts that may ruin your day that she may have no recollection of later and will completely deny. In your shoes, I would not invite her to save myself the anxiety and you and FH celebrate with her in private at a later time.

Maybe get your dress on and go take a picture with her and tell her you are going to prom or something that way you have that memory without all of the potential drama.
