Do I have to have an outer and an inner envelope for my invitations?

kristinatms, on November 3, 2009 at 12:56 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

My fiance and I are on a very limited budget. In order to try and save some money we are self-printing our invitations. Is is necessary to have both an outer and an inner envelope? (we are not excluding anyone however..."and family" and "guests" will be invited as well-our guest list is mosty family with long standing relantionships)

I would say do without it. What is the point of those anyway? lol If it saves money then I would do it. Having the 2 envelopes just makes it more fancy, but who cares?? :o)

No you don't have to have them, but just make sure you clearly label who you want to invite on the outside envelop. I read a post on here once with a gal that said "and family" on the invite and ended up with 16 extra unwanted guests!!!

I never understood the purpose of the inner envelope. Does anyone know what exactly it is for?

I think the inner envelope is to not only protect the invite (some have had ink smudges and lines on the invite from the post office processing machines) but also allows you the oppertunity to specify exactly who is invited. I didnt have one and only had a few self invited guests.

Personally I love the formality of an inner and outer envelope but it is by no means necessary anymore. Especially if you are inviting everyone in the household. I am also making my own invitations and ordering my envelopes from this great site that makes it affordable to me.

Double envelopes do give a more formal appearance but I think it's up to you if you want to have them or not. I've heard that the inner envelope helps protect the invitation. And like Celtic said, it helps to cut down on confusion of who's invited.

I decided to go with double envelopes and I got mine here.

Again, protecting the invite. I have seen tissue paper more in the center of a two sided invite. Im guessing its to keep the inks from rubbing together.

This is one area where you can totally save on costs. Only the bride cares about the envelope. All your guests will throw the envelope away and keep the invitation.

Make sure you check out the cost of mailing your invites also. Here's the link to the post office outlining size and weight restrictions. http://www.usps.com/prices/first-class-mail-prices.htm

If you are looking to save money make sure the invites you choose won't cost an arm and a leg to mail. I lucked out and mine can be mailed with a 44 cent stamp! But I'd originally wanted square invites and I've heard those cost about $1 each to mail!
