Do i have my musician colleagues play

Dizzy, on August 15, 2019 at 12:26 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4

Hi, I play music part time in a band that is awesome and does a fair amount of weddings. It would be awesome to have them play but also it's fun for people to just chill and relax, not asking guests to "work" (obviously if we did have them play, we would pay them). Before we ask everyone how they feel in the band I was wondering any thoughts here on asking "co-workers" to work or people in music who have had their colleagues play at their wedding or if they didn't why.

PS we have played at one member's wedding before, it was at least 10 yrs ago. Another one had some of band play but not as the band at his. Others had very very informal (ie house party) weddings or are not married.

Would the band members be invited as guests if they they weren't playing at the wedding? If yes, then I think they should just be allowed to be guests. If no, then sure, hire them to play if you want.

I’m a violinist and music teacher and I chose to hire outside musicians. I want my friends to just relax and they are so excited. They said we don’t mind playing if you need us to but we are happy about just enjoying your wedding. I have played for friends weddings because they asked me, but I would honestly prefer to just have fun. It still felt like I was working. The hardest part was finding someone I didn’t know lol

Hey there! Welcome to the WeddingWire community!

I tend to agree with the pps on this one. If your band members would otherwise be invited as guests, then I think it would be best to let them enjoy your wedding as guests and not have to work. If not, then hiring them as the band would be fine.

If you are inviting them as guests, perhaps you could talk to them about you all playing a favorite song or something as a treat for your guests. That could be something fun that you would all enjoy, while still enjoying the day.
