Do I count babies in my guest list?

Vick Party of 2, on March 6, 2015 at 2:13 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

We have several friends and family that will be having babies this year before our wedding. Do we count them on our guest list or just assume they will sit with mom and dad?

Depends on what your venue says. I didn't have to count toddlers below 2 for food, but I had to count them toward capacity (in case of fire, etc).

Ask your venue/caterer. Mine requested a guest count of only children old enough to eat a meal.

Of course, unless they are infants, you probably need a chair/seat for them. But they probably won't be counted in the catering count.

I only counted kids with ages 2 and up since they may need their own plate. But now that Janeen mentions it, I will also ask my venue about this, just to make sure.

It varies. With my venue under 7 is free and with catering under 2 is free. As far as actually seating goes I would ask the venue if they have high chairs and such. Most children won't probably sit without a high chair until they are 1-1/2 or 2.

I would ask about them counting towards food and whatnot, but I have always thought it was a good idea to include them in guest count as far as venue spacing/chairs go! As a Mom to two kids, its always nice to have an extra chair to sit an infant carrier on, or to keep the diaper bag close by, or to have a "special" seat for the toddler who is throwing a tantrum!

Not for dinner, but for seating, I would.

My SIL had just had a baby before my wedding, and while she didn't count for a meal, I had to keep in mind her carseat would take up space. I also didn't count my two-year-old cousin because he sat on my aunt's lap and ate off her plate.

I was very happy to hear that my venue doesn't count children below the age of 5! Smiley smile)

We have 9 grandkids ( 3 months-12 yrs) probably count them as 5-6 dinner plates. I know which ones will eat and how little the rest will eat!!!

Thank you! I'm going to contact my venue and see what they say. I didn't even think to ask about high chairs.

Count them just so you have enough room for them. Our vendor doesn't charge for children under 4, but they still need the count to ensure they have a seat, regardless of age.
