I've always bought my own dress when I was a bridesmaid.

Nope! The dresses are the one thing you can ask them to pay for themselves. If you can afford it, it's a nice gesture, but not necessary. But be sure to ask them their budgets privately before picking something!

They buy their dresses, and the groomsmen pay for their rental suits. Everything else should be paid for

You should choose a dress that is within everyone's budget and they buy it. It's one of the only "expected" things when you're asked to be in someone's wedding. Some brides give more freedom, "go pick a dress, whatever you want, but it should be purple", some (like me) want them in the same dress. You have the say in this, but if you don't want to come across as a jerk, it's a really good idea to make sure your bridesmaids are comfortable with the price as well as the style (don't ask a big-busted girl to wear a plunging neckline that you don't want altered if she is a modest person for example).

I'm always the outlier on these questions, but if you're requiring something specific, of your choosing, you should pay for it.

You don't have to purchase their dresses because their the same as long as the dress is within all of their budgets. Ask them separately and privately what their budget is, and then go from there. If you want them to get a dress that is out of their budget, then yes you'd have to purchase or cover the difference.

I've been used to the couple pays for the clothes (rentals or dresses) and/or the hair and make up.

Since we are a groom and groom wedding, we will provide the clothing to the wedding party and the girls can work on their hair and makeup on their own along with their accessories.

We are paying for everything! But traditionally...the wedding party pays for their attire and hopefully the bride & groom choose according to their party's budgets.

I've only been a bridesmaid once, and the bride bought our dresses and shoes. But I think most people expect to buy the dress if they agree to be a bridesmaid. I'm not having any, but we did pay for my Man of Honor's and FH's Best Man's tux rentals.

As a bridesmaid, I've done both. Two bought for me, one didn't. It was a nice surprise when the bride bought them. I expected to pay myself. For my MOH and flower girl I'm paying for their dress, jewelry, hair, and makeup. I want to treat them and not make it inconvenient, but that's just me. It's one reason why I'm not having bridesmaids. It gets really expensive!

Everyone is buying their own. His sisters kids are all in the wedding and we said that we would pay for them. My parents are paying for my sisters kids clothes.

Usually not, but it is a nice gesture if it is in your budget to do so. Regardless, just make sure it is a style they are all comfortable with.

It would be thoughtful of you to consider where your friends are in life. If they have good jobs with benefits and discretionary money, ok. But if they are in school or working a low wage job it would be helpful if you paid. I speak from experience as a poor bridesmaid who was kept asking to contribute a bit here, some more there....it made me quite bitter.

Im helping my girls buy their dresses since I picked an expensive one. If I had chosen one in the correct price range, then they would pay.

I'm in the UK and it's more usual for the bridesmaids to have their dresses bought for them. From joining WW i've certainly found a lot of differences between English and American weddings!!

I chose the dress (with the help of three of my girls) and made sure it was very reasonably priced and then they bought them.

Typically dresses are bought by the maids. You can purchase them if you want but don't consider that their "gift"

I was only a bridesmaid once, but I bought everything myself. She only had our hair done for us.
