Do any of you regret spending a lot of money on your wedding?

Let me start off by saying we are not in debt. FH saved money for nine months to pay his share of the wedding, I used my commission checks from work to pay my share and FH's parents are paying for our DJ, photographer and flowers. I don't know if I feel this way because the wedding is a month away...

I don't know if I feel this way because the wedding is a month away and I am just over it. I think about other things we could have spent the money on. Is this a normal feeling?

Thanks for everyone's input. We stayed within budget and we still have money saved up in case anything were to come up. I just need to relax and enjoy this time of my life. Thanks everyone!

I am going through the same thing right now! I saved money for the wedding and while none of us are going into debt, I could have spent the money I saved on my student loans (I am still obviously making payments, but I could have made even bigger payments with the money I saved!)

I think it totally depends on you and what's important to you. We planned to be engaged for two years for this reason and I knew I was going to change my mind a million times. At first we were looking at a vintage wedding that was going to cost us $20,000 to $25,000. My fiance started talking about building our dream house and I just couldn't do that expensive of a wedding knowing he'd be breaking his back trying to build us a home. As long as I am marrying him its my dream wedding. We also researched and found an all inclusive wedding destination for $5500 which is amazing and I mean ALL inclusive. So we can afford our awesome beach honeymoon and rooms for our small guest list. This won't break the bank and will be even more intimate and that's what I wanted. I hope this helps. To me the glitz and glamour didn't matter the memory making experiences mattered. Just keep that in mind. If this is what you want then don't regret it.

Yes and no. I mostly just wish weddings weren't so expensive. We are having a cheaper wedding than we could actually afford because we both agreed it was not with spending over $___ on. I know I wanted a semi-traditional wedding and I think we have made some great compromises to still have the wedding I dreamed of, but on a realistic budget. It is only one day, and it sucks spending the money, but I know it's a day we will look back on fondly and want to have those memories.

It does cross my mind a lot lately, especially as I near closer and closer to the wedding and am now taking care of small details that cost more money. I think it will be a lovely affair, but at the same time sometimes I wish we would have just had it on a beach with a smaller crowd. Too late now!

No. We spent about $25,000 and I actually regret not spending more money lol. $5,000 more would have been perfect.

My budget was fairly high. We had quite a bit more savings than we spent though, but shortly after our wedding both our cars went so we had to buy two cars (I buy everything in cash). Then the water heater died. I don't regret what we spent, but we didn't spend all of what we had.

Not regret but I will admit that when planning gets stressful I contemplate giving all of my BMs the money for their dresses and running off with FH!

I regret spending 10 bucks on lunch.....

I think you have to balance the money you have with the experience you crave. I can tell you that some of my most expensive wedding have felt like the most disappointing ones because it was all for show; to impress the relatives, very often relatives who could really care less. This is why I am such an advocate for carefully curated guest lists.

One of my couples put this in very concrete terms; every 250.00 guest they invited was 250.00 less in their kids college funds, 250.00 less against their student loans, 250.00 less for a down payment. Is it a bit mercenary? Sure it is, but it makes you really carefully consider just how many of those people sipping champagne you REALLY want there.

Nope. But our wedding wasn't too expensive by wedding standards Smiley winking All said and done it was under 10 grand. We are also Not in debt, but I knew I would never feel good about spending a ton on a bug budget wedding. Pick a budget you feel comfortable with, do a lot of research, and you should be able to stick to it Smiley smile

Yeah, Celia's right. I have no regrets about what I'm personally spending, but I'm on the older-ish side and saved a ton, no student loans, we own a house, our cars are in good shape, no CC debt, all that jazz, so I don't feel at all bad about spending 20k. There's a huge element of where you are in life, if I were 24 it would be different. And I really want to see the family that I haven't seen since the last grandparents died.

Yes looking back I think the prices are ridiculous. But just thinking that my friends and families will all travel from Asia / Europe / East Coast / Midwest I think it is really worth it. I am looking to spend more to thank them for attending the wedding.

I go back and forth. It seems crazy to me that we're spending over 30K on one day, but I know that the pictures and memories will last forever. And, I've always dreamed of a big, white, fancy wedding, so that costs money. I wanted passed hors d'oeuvres, plated entrees, open bar, uplighting, 5 foot tall centerpieces, and a 150+ person guest list. It is what it is. We aren't going into debt, we've already built a gorgeous home, and we have cars, etc. We'll recover afterwards Smiley smile

My savings is crying though..25 days!

We had a much more expensive wedding than I wanted. But, it was the second time for us both. We paid for it all just fine and had last minute additions because DH wanted to add more photo time, another choice at the bar, and special food in the dressing rooms before the ceremony. I was thinking about how the $ could have been used towards a down payment on property, SS's up coming 16th birthday and driving...DH was insistent that we spend to have the day and honeymoon we really wanted. In the end, it was beautiful and lovely, and our guests repeatedly told us how much fun they had. I wouldn't trade the day for the world. But, I'm sure we could have axed $5-10k from the budget and loved it just as much. We could have had a venue less pretty, fewer or less expensive food choices, 4 wines instead of 6, domestic, mass produced beer instead of micro-brew, no chargers, only white linens, we could have asked the BP to pay for their own dresses, suits, and shoes...but, we didn't want our wedding to be a financial burden on them, so it felt right to us to cover their expense for our wedding. So, in the end, we could have spent less, but if I had to put a price tag on our day and what it was for us, I guess the money was well spent.

I feel you. I'm constantly torn between

    "Omg that cost way to

much, there's no way I'm paying that"

    and

"It's my wedding, it's okay to splurge!"

Sometimes, but I am truly excited about the things I am able to do. I figure if I can save for this wedding then I can save for something else. I'm only doing this once so the experience is worth every penny.

We could afford to spend more but I sure as shit don't want to. It grosses me out to spend (re:waste) that much money on one day, really, a handful of hours. So no, I think I'm gonna be happy at my modest little budget of 4kish. (It already makes me cringe a bit as it is.)

All my life I could never understand people dropping 5k on a dress they'll wear for one day, that kind of stuff isn't for me. I'd rather go on vacation. And it's not like if we decided to spend 25k we would be having 100 people attend, it'd still be the same plan so I don't feel I'm giving anything up.

There's always "something else" you can spend your money on in any situation. You just have to decide if the known (wedding) is more worthy than the unknown (whatever that magical "something else" could hypothetically be).

When I first added up the final total I said "sheesh". But, no regrets. It was money well spent. I do look back and wish we'd spent more on some things and less on others though.
