Dj/photo Booth Down Payment

Margaret, on January 20, 2019 at 10:26 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12
Hello everyone! My wedding date is 10-12-2019 in Jacksonville, Florida. The total cost for a DJ for 5.5 hours and a photo booth is $1500( travel fees included and he lives 1.5 hours away). He is requiring $750 immediately to save the date. I personally think that’s high and that $500 is more reasonable. Based on his pricing it looks like he added $150 in travel fees.. opinions? Thanks! -MJ (Bride)

Your DJ should have sent you a contract / invoice 🧾

You should be able to tell exactly what everything costs.

Most vendors want a 50% deposit. But I would read the contract and if you like him, ask if he’ll split into three payments.

I personally think that 50% is a little high for a deposit, but not unheard of. Most of my vendors required 25-30% to hold the date. They are declining other business for your date at that point, so I understand them wanting to have some financial security in case you back out at the last minute.

$1500 seems like a reasonable price for what you are getting!

As for travel fees, I think you should contact the DJ directly to confirm. Travel fees are common, especially if they are more than xx miles away (we chose nearby vendors to avoid this cost). Just talk with your DJ to confirm their travel policy.

I agree with Peggy. Most vendors want half. His fee sounds reasonable to me. Were there no local DJs available? Picking a local person will eliminate travel costs.

My vendors all wanted a 50% deposit so I think that this is normal!

I had various deposit amounts but my photo video was a 50% deposit at $2382... it really depends on the vendor.

A lot of vendors do require 50%, probably because they have more cancellations than people realize. But it doesn’t hurt to ask if he’d be willing to negotiate a different payment schedule.

We had to pay a 50% deposit for our DJ and our venue.

Our DJ required a 50% deposit but several other vendors took a lower percentage deposit. A lot of them will be flexible if you express your concerns so I would ask if he'll consider a 1/3 deposit and maybe make another 1/3 in a few months.

It really does depend because my DJ and photobooth vendors only asked for 10% down. I was expecting more but that's all they asked for. My florist only requires a 10% deposit as well.

Our travel fees range from $40-$100 and vendors are traveling up to an hour. So that doesn't seem super high to me. 50% down seems reasonable if he is well reviewed & reputable and you have a contract. We put 7k down for our caterer (half) and 5k down for our venue (half).

I am getting my DJ through my venue and it will be $1500 with the photo booth that will be added to my venue bill. If I had gotten it separate outside the venue I was hearing about 50% deposit to save your date. But without a contract you're not getting a dime.
