Dj/music Opinions

Sam, on January 18, 2021 at 1:50 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7
Hello,
I live in Ohio and our governor put a restriction in place back in November 2020 that includes “no dancing at wedding receptions” besides first dances. I’m not getting married until October 2,2021 so I’m hoping this restriction will be lifted by then. I’m wondering if any other brides are in this type of situation on what to do about having a DJ. This is putting my fiancé and I on hold with putting a deposit on a DJ... We’d HATE to spend the money on a DJ and not being able to have a full dance party! My coordinator suggested a playlist she would be able to play from her phone that would connect to the speakers in my venue. Let me know your thoughts 😊

We got married last month and same thing, weren’t allowed dancing except for the first dances. We didn’t do a DJ and had a playlist instead. It worked very well. The only thing I didn’t like is that during the ceremony, we had a friend play each song as each group came in, and they just skipped to the next song. There wasn’t a nice flow into the next song like a DJ would have done. I’m probably the only one that noticed and it was still fine, just something to know about!

Let me just start off with saying no I’m not a DJ so ignore the name lol. I do think the DJs are very valuable as far as keeping good timing of the night and handling all announcements. They also know how to keep an even transition between dinner music etc. I definitely think getting a DJ still is a great way to go but its all on how you feel.
if you feel like your coordinator is capable of doing everything you’d want a DJ to do then why not save the money.

Hi Sam! We did have our DJ and we liked he controlled the announcements, the mic setup, the order of the speeches. We were allowed father/daughter and other significant dances, so our DJ handled those announcements too. For us, it was worth having the flow and technical aspects handled. Hope this helps in whatever you decide ❤️

My experience is similar to what your coordinator is suggesting. I got married last September and given the restrictions around group dancing we had made up our mind that a playlist was the better route to go. The idea was to have music play in the background only; except for first dance. My husband and I also had a ‘dance off’ to showcase our country specific dance moves since we are from different cultures. I had to create the playlist (approximately 4 hours worth of music from start to finish) and I had my cousin help with managing the playlist the entire time. This was an outdoor wedding with both ceremony and lunch reception at the same place and the entire event was about 5 hours.

    Katie,

Thank you for the response! That is s good point.... a DJ can make a nice flow... I feelA DJ can also entertain the crowd still even if dancing is still not allowed in October.

Hi Sam! March 2021 bride here! I’ve told myself to this point I’m completely cool with the no dancing ban and thinking it’ll be lifted here soon but every day I worry a bit more😅 Wish there was a way to tell if anyone foresees it being lifted! With that being said, our DJ quit last week, but we rebooked one this weekend! We feel like it’ll help the day be more cohesive and get us whatever we want, with whatever bans we have to work with.
