dj wants music in mp3 format

Alisha, on August 4, 2021 at 1:51 PM Posted in Planning 0 12
My parents have just booked a dj for our reception (he’s agreed to just play whatever we specify) and the dj wants us to give him whatever songs we want him to play in mp3 format, on something physical. I’m a little confused because I was thinking I’d just share a Spotify playlist since that seems easier, and I don’t even know if it’s legal to just hand songs over in a physical format like that. Not to mention the process of getting songs into mp3 format, since again I listen to music on a streaming platform.

Am I missing something or making it too complicated?

Is this a professional, experienced DJ? They should be providing/sourcing their own music, with guidance from you on your likes/dislikes.

I agree with Maggie. This seems bizarre. We just gave the names of specific songs we wanted played for different events (first dance, parent dances, etc.). For a few things, we shared a YouTube link for a specific cover we liked. Otherwise, we hired a DJ for their expertise in reading the room and playing what would go well. We had the opportunity to provide an "absolute must play" and a "do not play" list as well. I have never heard of the DJ requiring the physical songs. At that point, what are you paying them for? If all they're doing is just playing a burned CD or a flash drive, you can do that without spending hundreds of dollars.

This guy doesn’t sound like a professional at all. He should be locating the music himself based on your request list.

Okay yea that’s what I thought. My stepmom has used this dj for events but the whole thing is a little strange.

That is really weird and definitely outside of the norm. What exactly are you paying him for then? I would look for a professional DJ; this guy sounds pretty amateur and the reason you hire someone is so that you don't have to do all of that yourself.

This definitely seems like a red flag. DJs are supposed to provide and source their own music, hence a big part of the reason why you are paying them.

Yea seems odd my dj has all the music himself and if I want a song not on his list he will find it to add to his library.

This sounds very odd to me. MP3 is a low-resolution format as well - fine for personal listening but won’t sound all that great over a sound system at all. I’d be pushing back hard on this.

Wait......the DJ will only play what you specify? So say, for example, you give him 3 hours if music. Is he just gonna hit play or shuffle and be done? What if the event is 4 hours? He has nothing to offer but hitting a play button?? AND you need to give him the MP3 files too?????

No. Why pay him then? For that, I'd just hit shuffle and be done with it. You're already doing his job for him.

Why are you providing your own music to the DJ? That is his job. A DJ is supposed to provide and play all of the music. If you have to provide the music yourself, you don't even need him!
