DJ question - dinner music

MoreMoore, on August 30, 2017 at 9:42 AM Posted in Planning 0 16

Good morning you fabulous people! We are working on our song selection for our DJ. One thing I've never considered is what music to have playing during dinner.

What are you having played during that time? Specific songs or song types would be helpful for us. I'm thinking more upbeat than the pre-ceremony love songs but not songs you'd typically dance to. If that makes sense. Help?

My FH is really into EDM / Trance music. We are trying to incorporate this into cocktail/dinner hour, including some remixes of popular songs. We'll also pepper in some rat pack type stuff and some Motown for my dad.

    It's gonna be.....interesting!

I want to have him play some Piano Guys. Other than that, I don't have anything specific. I figured he would play what is typical, leaning classical.

We requested artists like Billy Joel, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Michael Bolton (I weirdly love him) to be played during dinner. It was truly just background music though!

I know it's just background music and no one will probably notice. Hell, I probably won't even notice. But, he asked if there was anything specific and of course I trip over the dumbest irrelevant details. I think I have a better idea what we're looking for now. @Laura minus the Michael Bolton (because, well... Michael Bolton lol) I think that's probably the type of stuff we'll pick. Thank you all for the advice Smiley smile

I plan to mostly let the DJ decide, with classics like Frank Sinatra, etc. But, I also plan to ask for some newer mid-tempo songs that I'm not sure would otherwise fit into the reception, like I Will Follow You into the Dark, by Deathcab for Cutie, and Just Breathe by Pearl Jam, to add some of our personality to it. Or maybe those are better for cocktail hour? I am still trying to figure it out myself.

I only listen to jazz, so we're having our DJ play a few of my cds (Paul Hardcastle, Michael Lington, etc).

We just did this today, too! It sounds like we're going for a similar vibe, too mellow for dancing but more fun than the pre ceremony music. This is our list/guide of what vibe we're going for. Hope it helps!

You Make Me Feel So Young - Frank Sinatra

How Sweet It Is- James Taylor

This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)-Natalie Cole

I Was Made to Love Her- Stevie Wonder

Stand By Me- Ben E. King

Hallelujah I love her so- Ray Charles

What a wonderful world- Same Cooke

    Cecilia- Simon and Garfunkle

Scenes From an Italian Restaurant- Billy Joel

    From the Clouds- Jack Johnson

    Domino- Van Morrison

We are just letting our DJ play whatever! I don't think people will be paying too much attention.

Since there's a captive audience and I know at least my FFIL is not a fan of the country music his wife and I love, I think we'll just go for some slower classic rock songs that don't really work as well to dance to but are still amazing to listen to or break out singing (because I'm a dork and one of the best parts of college was listening to a large group of people sing along to Don't Stop Believing).

I'm having our DJ pick the dinner music. It's the only music that I will leave completely up to him.

We're most likely going to trust our DJ with what he thinks is best, but if you search wedding dinner music on YouTube there are playlists you can listen to to get some ideas!!
