DJ Invoice vs Contract

MSWedding, on March 28, 2015 at 8:54 AM Posted in Planning 0 12

I found a DJ on Thumbtack and everything seemed fine. I looked up their reviews and pulled up their Facebook, and I liked what I saw. The amount was also fantastic compared to everyone else because of a promotion by finding them on Thumbtack. However, they only sent me an invoice, not a contract, so I asked about it. They said an invoice is a contract, but it didn't have any times or the location, so I asked if I could get an actual contract and they said yes and sent it to me. The owner has his signature on it, and it all looks good. Do I print it out and sign and scan it back to them, or does paying normally count as my signature? This is the first vendor I have had to do through e-mail only because of them being out of town, so I can't pay or turn the contract in in person. So, is this normal? Is this how DJs operate? Had you ever just gotten an invoice and told it counts as a contract?

Yes. Print it out and sign one and send it to him. Paying doesn't count as a signature.

Agree with Celia's advice! We had to do our contract with our videographer via email due to distance too. As long as all your dates and times (and list of services being provided) looks good, make sure the vendor and you date and sign.

First of all, I am so glad to see that you know that a proposal is not a contract.

This is the most common problem I run into as a Month of Coordinator.

1st Brides failing to realize Invoices and Proposal's are not contracts.

2nd It takes 2 signatures to make a complete legal contract, yours and the vendors.

yes, please print and sign it. Then scan and e-mail or snail mail it back to your vendor.

Just want to add to also make sure you keep a copy of this for yourself either in a printed paper form or the saved email.

Have them send you the contract signed by them with all the times and date. Pretty much everything you talked about. Keep a copy for yourself and send a copy back to them. This DJ doesn't sound like a pro. No contract? Im honestly curious how much he charged. He should also should have some sort of planning form with all your times and song for your special dances.

I was e-mailed a contract with everything correct and the owner signed and dated, so they didn't have a problem getting me one. They are "the southeast's largest and premier Wedding and Special Event Entertainment Company." They've won awards, rated highly on weddingwire and theknot. And they said that once we book with them, they would send the questionnaire to find out what songs we want, genres we do and don't like, and introductions/order of events. They sound like a pro, but I couldn't help but question the "Typically we use the invoice as a contract..." Wasn't sure if this was normal for a DJ or not because another one just sent me an invoice too (but since they wouldn't answer my questions I moved on and found this one).

My personal opinion is that you need to meet with them and then let your intuition guide you.....

@MSWedding, before you sign the contract, read it. If there is anything in the contract you do not understand, contact a contract attorney and have them review it with you. Only sign it and return it if you are in agreement with everything in the contract.

All the advice here is very good in my opinion. Both you and the vendor need to sign. Printing and scanning to email with signature should work. I did that with two vendors. Do keep a copy.

Make sure you are able to actually sit down and meet with the DJ who will be performing at your wedding. Nothing is worse than hiring a person that will control your day- and you feel like you can't approach them.

If they are "the southeast's largest and premier Wedding and Special Event Entertainment Company" they probably have lots of DJs under contract... make sure the one coming to your reception is the one you want!

We had the same thing with our DJ. He sent me the invoice, had all the info on it. I then printed it off sent him an email money transfer, signed the invoice, scan, sent it back. He then sent me a new contract showing the deposit was paid and gave me a bunch of paper work with song selections to fill out
