Do you need a DJ for cocktail hour and what is most common for people to do?

I won’t have a dj, however I will have a small live band composed of three guys playing piano, violin and saxophone...

I've always seen background music played during cocktail hour.

Our DJ is going to play light music at our cocktail hour, he said he normally does some light rock and instrumental music.

We didn't start our DJ until the reception as our live musicians played for the cocktail hour (and ceremony). I've never been to a wedding that didn't have some kind of background music during the cocktail hour, though.

I think most people wont take part in the cocktail hour of actually getting drinks and they would find their seats. So it might be nice to have music in the background.

Typically background music plays while food & drinks are served. People mingle, take pictures, sign guest books, etc.

Our DJ played during cocktail hour, but it was softer music. The party type music didn't start until the reception. You just don't want your guests left in silence.

My mom’s friend is a professional guitarist, we hired him to play during cocktail hour and during lunch at the reception and it was lovely! I don’t think I normally would’ve splurged on the live music but since he was a friend of my mom’s, he charged us next to nothing lol (of course we fed him and still tipped him well). But the live instrumental music was a really lovely touch, if you know someone or have the budget for it! If not, any way you can just plug an iPod in and have a playlist going? It seems wasteful to have a DJ imo since it’s not like people will be dancing, the music really should just be in the background

We have booked our DJ for the entire event. He'll get to the venue about an hour before the ceremony to set up. Then he'll do the ceremony music, and afterwards move inside for cocktail hour and the full reception.

I don't know how common that is, but it's what I wanted, and I have a DJ who is willing to do it!

I agree. I’ve never seen it any other way, honestly. I thought it was the norm to have the dj there the whole time?
