dj During Cocktail Hour?

Katysnyder295, on April 3, 2019 at 5:10 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

I'm trying to get quotes for a DJ/MC for our wedding. We want them at the ceremony and reception. Do people commonly have them? At the majority of weddings I've been to, I haven't noticed any music. Our cocktail hour will be at an aquarium too, so I feel like people REALLY won't notice the music. What are your thoughts?

Have you asked the venue what they allow? Loud music might bother the animals.

Most weddings I've been to have background music during cocktail hour.

Most weddings I’ve been to have had background music during cocktail hour. If the DJ will be there for the ceremony and reception, they’re going to charge you for cocktail hour anyway.

Both our ceremony and reception are at an aquarium, we're getting a DJ. Hell the event manager recommended it. Their tanks are soundproof

The DJ we selected has wireless speakers that he can move from the ceremony to the cocktail hour. Many DJs we talked to charged extra for additional speakers or to cover cocktail hour, so I would definitely check with each person you contact! I'm sure with eating, drinking, and chatting, that music isn't a necessity, but I love the idea of background music!

Our DJ did the music for our ceremony & reception as well. And during cocktail hour, he had a playlist that he played as background music while he finished his setup in the actual room. It worked out really well. I'd say music is fairly normal during cocktail hour, but definitely not a necessity. And yes, being at an aquarium - I would ask your venue what others have done or if they have any restrictions.

I feel this way as well! I only hired my dj for ceremony and reception because 4 hrs was much cheaper than 5 hrs. I specifically never remember music during cocktail hour at the weddings I have been to. Was it playing or was it simply silent? I can't remember cuz we were all mingling and in and outside. My brother said maybe just a playlist from a speaker will add background noise so people don't notice if it is silent. So i'll think about it. I feel like for your case especially for an aquarium it's really not necessary for the cocktail music!

Yep! We are having ours at the ceremony to play the music and do the sound for the officiant and us, as well as the whole reception. It is nice to have them do both so that they aren't trying to set up during the ceremony. Plus, I think it is a bit weird to have them set up before everything then just see an empty DJ table if the ceremony and reception are at the same location.
