DJ during ceremony?

Rebekah, on November 16, 2017 at 6:37 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

So I never really thought about it until now, but has anyone had their DJ play the music for the ceremony? I wasn't planning on hiring a musician for the ceremony but all of a sudden I thought it might be weird to have a DJ at an outdoor ceremony... Anyone else do this or should I think about hiring a musician for the ceremony? Thanks!

My DJ is going to be bringing a wireless setup for the ceremony and playing a song for the processional. It isn't like there's a big DJ booth outside lol

We have DJ's for our outside (and of course, inside) ceremonies all the time, and they generally do sound for the officiant.

Ours was there for the ceremony. We ended up with a small enough group/space that our officiant didn't need a microphone, but the DJ just had a small speaker in one corner that was enough to hear our processional and recessional music. He also played music during seating.

Our dj will be playing the ceremony music. He will then set up for the reception while the piano player is playing for cocktail hour. (Same venue)

Yes, we had our DJ handle the sound and music for our ceremony. He had two stations that he brought so that he had his main station set up indoors for cocktail hour and the reception and a second station outdoors in our ceremony area. He also provided the speakers and microphone set up for the ceremony.

Our DJ only provided microphone for ceremony. For the ceremony and cocktail hour we had 8 mariachis playing live music.

Our DJ did the music for our outdoor ceremony. The pavilion we got married under had an outlet that he was able to hook up to. It was a small set up, probably about 1/2 of what he had for the reception. He set up at the reception site, then went and set up at the ceremony site, and was disassembled and back at the reception site in time for cocktail hour. He was amazing.

ETA- He also provided the microphone for the officiant and readers.

I have friends playing live ceremony music, but I was under the impression that it's actually more popular in my area for the DJ to play the ceremony music. I don't think it's weird at all.

Our DJ is doing two set-ups, one for the ceremony and one for the reception. Ceremony is outside and reception is inside. We have him for 6 hours so he will be doing both. We don't have the extra funds for harps and what not lol.

Our DJ has a small setup for our ceremony music. Worked out great!

He had the reception all setup beforehand (same location/different space).

As a DJ for wedding ceremonies I begin by playing background music as guests arrive and are seated, as well as during the ceremony. I also play music as the guests are leaving, during the receiving line, or during the transition into the cocktail hour or reception. I also provide all necessary sound equipment.

Also, I offer live saxophone music and DJ services during the reception.

We needed our DJ for sound during the ceremony, so they might have to be there anywhere.

We hired a violinist for the ceremony and I'm glad we did. It was surprisingly affordable.

Thank you everyone for the responses! I had never been to a wedding where they have the DJ at the ceremony so I’m glad to hear this is not actually uncommon.

Our DJ did the ceremony too - background music while guests arrived, processional and recessional songs, announcements about turning off phones/instructions for photos, and a mic for the officiant/vows. It was necessary for us!

Our ceremony will be on the beach past sand dunes from where reception area is, so no DJ equipment will make it that far. He plays guitar/sings (wonderfully) for the ceremony and cocktail hour, then will switch to DJ for reception. We saw him perform at a vendor meet and greet at our venue earlier this year and knew he was the one!
