dj Cost? Alternatives?

How much should we expect to spend on a DJ? I'm not sure if we'll be able to afford one with our budget, so we've been contemplating renting sound equipment and hooking up a carefully selected iPod playlist, which it looks like we could accomplish for about $400. Is this a good idea? Terrible idea?...

We are doing a speaker with a playlist set up! Soooo much cheaper!

Things to think about.... designate a guest(family member) to be the mc. That way when you do “your song” they can adjust the song etc. Also make sure you have a microphone for the speeches!

Our DJ was $2300, in SoCal. My DJ was hands down one of my best vendors, he was instrumental in a few things needed for my wedding. I do not recommend iPod for weddings, nor not true professional DJs. Make sure the DJ has the best equipment-it really makes a huge difference.

That's terrible! The DJ probably wasn't a true professional DJ then. That happened at my BILs wedding last month, the equipment had a problem during the ceremony, and the DJ had no backup. My DJ was a true professional and spent 2 hours setting up, sound checks and had back up equipment.

My venue requires you to use their DJ or use the sound system. They charge 875

A DJ was the one place I was not willing to skimp on.. they keep the party going. I have been to a wedding where everyone left after dinner, because it was quite boring.

Dj’s charge per event. In terms of, if you want them for ceremony., cocktail, reception, it’ll be more expensive than hiring then just for one portion for your wedding.

We hired our DJ just for reception- four hours. It cost us 1,100. We have a string trio for ceremony and cocktail hour. So we only needed the DJ for the remaining four hours of the wedding.

If you can do it yourself for $400, spend a little bit more for a professional. a DJ really helps set the mood and pace for the evening, something a playlist simply can not do. We paid $670 for our DJ, and that was for 6 hours and with upgrading to several uprights and extra mic's for the ceremony. (Orlando FL)

If you don't care about having a packed dance floor - then I think you can skip the DJ. You will need to have your friend make announcements and have your DOC or whoever is in charge make sure everything is running smoothly and being announced.

Our DJ is about 800$ but someone gifted it to us. We were in your shoes where we couldn’t afford it. So we paid for the deposit and our friend is taking care of the rest

Thank you for all of the price points and suggestions! I'm thinking I must be pretty late to the game on this, but I started looking on thumbtack.com last night and found a few who are nearer to our location than the twin cities, plus the site lists generalized quotes. Looks like it could cost as little as $650...I'd absolutely be willing to pay just $250 more than a sound system to ensure the event is properly MC'd and has someone who knows what they're doing!

Our DJ is $1000 for the ceremony and reception and includes all lighting etc. DJs start around here usually at $1200 and we are in a pretty rural area.

Try to find someone who does it as a side job. They usually cost around that much.

We've booked a DJ for 5 hours (cocktail and reception) for $650. We got lucky in that he lives super close to the venue, that meant low/no travel fees and we saved a few hundred dollars off his normal quote. He's highly rated, has been in the business for years, and seems awesome. Very excited to have found him! Now we're just iPod DJing the ceremony and the rest is in good hands! Glad I asked this question on here Smiley smile

We are using an in-house dj at our venue for $650. That covers 5 hrs for the reception. If we want to use an outside dj it would cost us $400 so we decided it made more sense to use in-house. A lot of venues in Western NY charge an outside dj fee and require that they use the venues equipment.
