WeddingWire has a great checklist on here to help with the planning.
First things to do : make a budget, make a guest list and then find a venue

Decide on your guest list, what you are willing/able to spend without going into debt.

Look at Peerspace.com for inexpensive venues
Use a favorite restaurant for catering
Decide what your top 5 most important elements are and skip the rest.

The cheapest way of having a small crowd like 20 to 50 ppl. Faux flowers...or DIY FLOWERS...clearence dresses and just catching sales on everything. Just havibg balance. Maybe having food from family or friends...much more...

Small is relative. For some people that's 100 or less and 50 or less for others. There is no "must/should have" number because everyone is different in who they want in attendance. Make a list with your fiance of who you can't imagine spending the day without them being there. That becomes your guestlist you work with.

Start with a budget. How much can you afford to spend and how much of that do you want to spend on one day? That alone will give you a good idea of what is or is not possible.

Then, get an idea of the wedding size. No one can tell you how many people to have or not to have. The best thing to do is make a list of everyone you'd want to invite, see how many that is, and possibly make cuts from there. The single biggest budget killer is guest list because so many details depend on the number of people. It dictates everything from the size of the venue to amount of food and drinks.

50 to me is considered small...for me after 50...it can get tricky. Also depends on how much the venue cost per person

    - small guest list

    - nontypical wedding venue (my venue is run by county parks and rec, $410 vs the $5,000 wedding barn a few miles down the road), also consider having just 1 venue.

    - check clearance for dresses (I got my dress for 80% off this way), also try to find a dress that fits perfect in the beginning. Alterations aren’t cheap. Even think about no traditional dresses. You can find some beautiful ones on Amazon.

    - small bridal party. More bridesmaids/groomsmen mean more gifts, more flowers, more people to feed at rehearsal and reception

    - consider reception timing to not be a meal time. Serve punch and cake, maybe some finger foods

    - alcohol will bring your costs up a lot.

    - when looking at decor, think about how you can repurpose it after the wedding. Can you use it at home? I’m using mason jars for vases because we plan to have a large garden and I can use them for canning. There are other things I know we’ll use as decor in our home for years.

    - don’t be afraid of second hand. There are a lot of people out there who spent a fortune on their wedding and all that stuff is sitting in a closet or shed and they’re often willing to pass it on for a fraction of what they spent on it. I picked up two basketfuls of decor from a niece of a friend for only $59. I’m pretty sure the lanterns alone cost her that originally. Also Facebook Marketplace.
