diy Wedding Cake

Rachel, on January 6, 2025 at 8:10 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 5

Hello all!

My fiancée and I are trying to cut costs as much as possible (like many of you, I'm sure), which means there'll be a LOT of DIYing for our wedding. I'm actually excited about it, because I'm a highly creative and crafty person.

One thing I'm curious about is making our own wedding cake. We're not aiming for an enormous wedding at all (immediate family only at our own home - probably about 10-12 in attendance), so I don't think it would be an incredibly exhausting task for a smaller cake. I'm not experienced in cake decorating, but I'm certainly willing to practice if it means saving a bundle on our wedding.

Has anyone else done this? Is it worth the effort? Thanks in advance :-)

With such a small wedding, you may be better served going to your local grocery store (Publix, if you’re in the south, has great cakes) and buying a nicely decorated cake for relatively cheap. Cake decorating is a hard skill, and you’d likely spend more money on the piping tips, etc. than just buying a $30 custom cake ordered from a super market that will taste good.

Since your wedding is so small, I would probably go to a grocery store and order a cake rather than attempting to make the cake yourself especially because if you plan on practicing you'll need all of the supplies in order to make at least 2 cakes (practice 1 & final 1).

Can you design a custom cake topper and place on a store bought cake? I've heard Publix and Costco cakes are delicious. Other than deciding who will pick this up, this plan will free up your time to focus on your partner and enjoy your celebration. Ps. If you pick a decorative venue, you can skip elaborate decorations but for me, DIY is stressful. Best wishes.

I love this idea! After seeing the responses, I think I'll go the grocery store route. Can't go wrong because I sometimes will pick up a slice to have as a snack, so I know it'll be a great choice. Thanks, y'all! :-)

    Hi there!
    A seasoned Chef here,

Making your own cake is simple! Decorating tips through YouTube shorts can help. If you're looking for premade edible decor, try joann fabrics or Michaels arts and crafts. Check the websites for coupons as well. Pinterest has good inspo. if you're looking for flashy, try edible glitter. If you're looking for subtle, go with edible pearls. And if you don't want to bake a cake ..don't! Buy a plain cake from Walmart or Hannafords and decorate it yourself! Hope this helps xoxo
