DIY Tulle Backdrop

Smoothie, on August 12, 2016 at 9:39 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14

So I'm getting married 9/2 and the DIY projects are in full swing! I'm having the event in a local park, and there were some pretty trees we were going to be in front of, but they've been recently chopped. So I saw this idea online and thought, "Hey, I could actually do this!" Tutorials online seem to skimp on explaining exactly how much tulle you need. This one will have about 8ft square work of coverage, and I used six 100ft/6in wide rolls from Papermart. So about $45 worth of supplies, not including the pvc pipe. If there had been trees to hang it from, I could've used rope instead of pipe. This will be nice and flow outside, but if you want thicker coverage, you'll need wider tulle (and definitely more of it). Imagine this at night with some string lights!

Awesome idea. Are you getting married at night? Are you getting battery operated string lights or have an outlet?

I thought about DIYing my backdrop but didn't want to stress on who and how will set it up Smiley smile

This looks awesome! Do you mind going into more detail about how tall this is and what steps you took to make it sturdy, etc?

I'm getting married in a park in the late afternoon, so it will be near dusk, and darker by the time we leave.

This will be 8 ft tall, and about 7ft wide. My fiance built the PVC base for it, basically measuring the pipe for two legs and a beam across, and making some H-shaped feet to hold it up. We may need extra support depending on the wind, like putting stakes in the bottom, and maybe a more solid pipe through the top to prevent sagging, although it's very light. Tying the tulle to a length of rope would have been the optimal choice, but I have nothing to hang it from. I just measured the tulle into double lengths of 8ft, with some slack. It was actually pretty funny to watch.

Here's a picture of how I measured the tulle. I sat two chairs about 8ft4in apart, and had a giant clothespin on each chair to loop the tulle around.

All in all, this probably took three or four (leisurely) hours to complete, and I was totally sucked into a tv show so there was more time lost lol. And the battery string lights work best so there's not a cord hanging off, and they don;t get as hot so no fire hazards. Just be sure to get nice tulle, like 100% nylon, or it will wrinkle and look really janky. Jo-ann Fabrics sells nylon tulle in bulk if you want to cut your own. They have rolls, but they're only 25ft long, you'll spend four times as much money and you won't be able to get enough full lengths without wasting the last 7 or 8ft on each roll.

Oh, I also saw this idea done well with lengths of ribbon instead of tulle. You could mix and match ribbon and it would definitely look amazing. I've also seen old lace curtains used, but honestly, the tulle was more affordable than two or three sets of curtains.

I wish I had somewhere to store it where it could hang though.
