DIY PVC Pipe Wedding Arch

Kelsey, on August 29, 2016 at 10:57 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14

Has anyone had any experience with building a wedding arch using the PVC Pipes? I've found a few sources on Pinterest and I've priced out all the materials need to build it.. It's less than 20 dollars!! WOO!

Anyway, if anyone has built one of these PLEASE fill me in on ANY unexpected or good-to-know tidbits.

Also, what material did you use to decorate? I am interested in a white fabric, but I'm concerned you will see the PVC Pipe through any sheer-like fabric.

We aren't making an arch but we're making a stand for our photo booth. There's videos on YouTube. Where they go through the whole thing.

You could always spray paint it dark before doing the draping over it?

Im not sure it would coat evenly but from a few feet back plusbthe draping it should look fine Smiley smile

Following. Hoping to do something similar for the ceremony backdrop. I'm not wild about the ultra-rustic background at our ceremony venue. Smiley tongue

Make sure you have a way to keep it stable, especially if you want to use it outside! The wind will take it down in a heart beat or it will sway around a bunch if it doesn't have the proper support. Good luck!

No longer DIYing because I found a good deal but this is what we are doing with light blue color.

Just want to drop one of the example here. Now I have no idea how they keep it upright which was my concern when I was thinking of DIY route.

This might be a long shot but maybe at the bottom put them in 5 gallon bucks with sand or rock or something to hold it down and then cover it with the sheer's or whatever you drape on it.?

Wind. Prepare for wind. We did this exact construction for a photo booth at a health fair I ran and our biggest issue was wind that came in through our entrance. Though ... if you have the 'curtains' split like so, you may be safe (no sail effect). Make sure to glue the connected parts together so you have as few pieces to put together the day of as possible, but also make it easy to transport. Add weights on the bottom as well to make it sturdy.

I bought a whole bolt of satin on Amazon for like $22. It was more than enough to do the 9 ft tall backdrop and two 12' long wall dividers 7.5 ft tall (8 ft ceiling in that area). Satin is not transparent, it fully hid the black pipe and drape stands.

As Ro said, please be prepared for wind. I acted as a last minute DOC for a friend's wedding last year and his bride was soooooooooooooo insistent on have a PVC wedding arch, but she didn't account for wind. When I asked her about it prior to the wedding, she explained that I couldn't see it because it had already been built and we didn't have time to go look at it prior to the wedding. Fine. I asked her about wind. She told me not to worry about it. Sad to say, the wedding arch blew away prior to the ceremony. Use sandbags or any other type of weight to keep it stable. It was a gorgeous day for this bride, but the breeze and wind couldn't care less.

I made my backdrop out of pvc. It was very easy. To cut you can either make it very easy but spend a little more to buy a pipe cutter or just use a saw. As for the size of the pvc some of it bends very easy! !!! If you want an actual arch look at the thinnest pvc, if you want a square arch make sure it has plenty of legs to hold it up. I went with 8' pieces since fh is 6'5 + and it's wobbly. So we will be having strings attached to the wall to keep it up.

Be very aware of wind, and even with no wind those can topple over very very easily.

Think about the physics and mechanics of what you need to do to make it not topple!!!
