diy photo/selfie station -- will people use it?

starsinwaves, on June 11, 2018 at 12:53 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 14

I searched this topic and didn't see specifically what I was looking for so...

Has anyone done a DIY photo/selfie station or been to a wedding with one? I decided against getting a photo booth for various reasons, but I still love them at weddings, so I was thinking about just setting up a backdrop with props and my iPad on a tripod with one of the photo booth apps. I figure this shouldn't cost more than $100-$150 and our DOC can set it up and help out if anything goes wrong, and it can be out for the entire cocktail hour/reception. I just don't know if it's worth the effort/if people will actually use it. We wouldn't bother with setting up a printer, maybe we'd print the photos out after the wedding and send them with the thank you cards. Would love to hear any feedback on this idea.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing, but with a Polaroid camera so the guests can keep the photos. I've been to a wedding that had a similar set up and I saw quite a few people use it.

This might be a know your crowd thing. I would absolutely love to have a polaroid set up too and I think my guests would love it.

I am thinking about doing the same... I plan to order a backdrop and use my iPad as well. I was thinking about 1 of 2 ways. The first way would be to set up my regular printer (it Airprints) and let them print as they take the picture. The second (which I am leaning towards) is no printer and letting them either emailing, texting, or facebooking it to themselves. This is based on using WiFi and if you aren't connected to WiFi then it will just mass send everything once you are connected. I am leaning this way as the printer is one less thing to have to worry about lugging or breaking!

We are doing this, but with our digital camera on a tripod. We will be turning a ten second timer on, so all they have to do is press the shutter button and pose! Smiley smile my only concern is if some kids accidentally knock over the tripod. It could really hurt an iPad to drop that far, or even my camera. So, we’re hoping for the best and that people will be watching their children.

Honestly, in my experience, these aren't really used. I've been to a handful of weddings in the last year where they had DIY photobooths and only a few people actually used them or they went untouched.

Most weddings I've been to that have had makeshift/DIY stations like this only get a few peoples attention, but this could be our crowd. Most weddings I go to are large groups of people in their 20's-30's, but again it might be popular for others.

I think this is a big "know your crowd" type of thing. My guest would definitely use it but we are doing a full on photo booth. For yours to be successful, add a guest book at the selfie Station and ask guests to leave a pic and take a pic home and make sure your DJ reminds guests that it is there.

As long as it is in a good location then I think the guests will utilize it! I have been to some weddings where it was in a separate room or just not visible to guests so then it didn't get much attention.

We are setting up a DIY photo booth. We will have a backdrop and props available. I'm also going to set up my digital camera on a tripod and set a timer. We have a small guest list so, didn't want to spend a fortune on a real photo booth but, I know it will definitely be used. I plan to email the pics to guests after the event and can always print some if I want to after the wedding.

I'm doing one, but I'm getting several selfie sticks for people to use at it, I know my crowd would love it though.

I'm doing a selfie wall. It will be a flower backdrop I got cheap off of orientaltrading.com and I'll have a nice box with selfie props and selfie sticks. Folks can use their own phones and just post to facebook that way they can get their pictures in without pulling out their phones too much during the wedding trying to get selfies in. No prints. The DJ will announce it during cocktail hour. Total $45-50.

My sister has an Instax polaroid camera so I just bought a bunch of film for it and a nice scrapbook so people can take their photos, paste them into the book, and write a nice message. I originally wanted a photobooth too but ultimately decided against it for budget purposes. But I am hoping this will be a great alternative! The instax film is kind of pricey but I got the book, metallic sharpies, and 4 boxes of film for around $120. Hope this helps! Smiley laugh

One of my best friends did this and we loved it! She put it near the bar by the entrance to the reception, we kept running outside to take photos. She got such cute props!

Thanks all! I think we'll give it a shot. Worst case, we spend a hundred bucks and the kids and teenagers enjoy it and we get a few silly bride and groom pictures out of it.

Also, I'm thinking we could repurpose my ceremony arch and draping to use for the photo booth, which would make this even more cost effective.
