diy invitations questions...

Pang, on November 27, 2019 at 10:20 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 9

To all the brides that did DIY their own invitations, where or how did you determine what paper weight to buy?

I really like some of the template design on Etsy. I'm trying to determine if I should just buy premade invitations or DIY them myself. I'm pretty crafty and enjoy making cards.

If you did DIY, if you had the option to redo it again, would do it or just buy?

I'm just going to use typical card stock and print them (I designed them too. I'm a graphic designer). Invitations are cute, but very few people will care if they aren't super high quality.

I haven’t done mine yet but I’m going to use an Etsy template and use printrunner.com or my local printer to print them. DIY-ing them sounds awesome, but just make sure you consider the amount of people you’re inviting. It could be exhausting creating a large amount of invites by hand!

I bought mine on Etsy and talked to a local printer about printing them. I also noticed on mine that the designer suggested a particular weight (100 lb). So you could check with the designer or a print shop for recommendations.

Hey Pang! DIYing your invitations sounds great, but you should definitely consider how long this will take you. If you find a design that you love on Etsy, do you think it would be worth saving your time and ordering them online?

When it comes to the paper weight, I would definitely use cardstock as Amber said but I don’t think it’s super important to have expensive paper for them as most of your guests wouldn’t notice something like this.

Hey Pang, what stock did you decide on? I created a decent looking invite in word (actually the mac version of word, Pages.) Currently I'm debating on whether I want a 110 lb Linen stock or 16 pt Matte Cardstock.

I am DIYing my invites. The BEST resource I found, by far, was cardsandpockets.com. They do a few things: provide card stock for you to print your own invites (in specific invite sizes), or they can print them for you (this is what I'm having done and so far so good). They have envelopes (way cheaper than most places), they can address your envelopes for you as well. They even have FREE templates that you can use to generate your own invites. It's a really fantastic, well-priced resource. Oh yeah, you can order cheapo samples of all the paper stock you want (I ordered actual samples of invite paper in the right sizes and just paper samples to look at colors, etc, and it's like $.35 a sample for colored paper samples). 100 lb is a pretty good card stock weight. A lot of commercial invite printers use even heaver stock (200+ but it's hard to find for DIY invites). 100-110 lb card stock feels pretty weighty and that's what I'd recommend.

I went with a 100lb card stock from cardsandpockets.com. I ordered a few samples of different shades and I like the feel of their matte card stock paper. It has a nice weight compare to the ones available at OfficeMax.
