DIY invitations from Michaels Craft/ craft stores...

maria, on June 8, 2011 at 3:13 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

So I'm thinking of just going this route with invitations. ( 25 to a kit for $ 24.99) I'll need only 2 boxes. I found a kit that comes w the invitation, respond card and direction card. Also comes with a ribbon. It opens up and the invitation is on the left side and the other cards are tucked on the right ...It's actually pretty nice and not plain at all. How exactly is the quality when you print it yourself? Any else do this before? What are your thoughts and advice? Do I need a special program? Seems to simple to be true haha ... thanks Smiley smile

I got the same invitation from Micheals'. I want to do the printing myself but my mother wants me to get it done professionally. I'm scared of my printer because its been acting up. I think I'll play it safe and have it done. it can't be that much more.. at least I'm hoping. Templates are on the website and match with microsoft word.

Most of the kits have templates. Can you show us the kit you are looking at?

If you have an ink jet printer, you are limited to ink jet papers, and heavier cover stocks may not work. If you have a laser printer, you need to look for items that withstand high temperatures to ensure a high quality print.

I know CJ bought her kit from Hobby Lobby (most kits are the same there as at Michaels) and she tried to take them to get them printed someplace and no one would do it, that the paper isn't laser jet quality.

So don't forget to add the cost of ink to the budget too (or the cost to take them to get printed if it is even possible)

There are also websites that you can design your invite and they will send them to you. Many of the websites you can find some kind of coupon code at retailmenot.com

I got one of those kits and my mom printed them with no problems...I would say she has a ink jet printer. Nothing too special... I think that my invites turned out really well

I am looking to do the same thing, and actually have to buy a new printer anyway (how convenient). So let me know how it worked out, and what type of printer you used! Good Luck Smiley smile

I did a kit from Michaels for my wedding invitations. I got lots of compliments! However, it was a big hassle. I had to hand feed every single piece of paper. Formatting was a challenge. I ended up having to make my own templates on Microsoft Word to get the margins right. I also had no end of frustration getting the response cards to feed properly into the printer and ended up with quite a few mis-prints. In conclusion... I'm not sure whether or not it was worth it, but I'm quite satisfied with the end product and I really owned the project through all the work I put into it.

My sister did her own for her wedding and it saved her a TON of money. However, like Andrea said, there were times when my sister was so frustrated with the formatting and the printing that she wanted to throw the computer out the window! I say if you go this route, make sure you have the right printer, paper and all the supplies you need BEFORE you start. That might limit some of the issues. Good luck!

If you go this route, be sure to print off a 40% off coupon. You may have to make 2 purchases in order to get both at 40% off.

    Good Luck

I bought my kit from Michaels. It was a 30 qty kit but I got it on sale (coupons are great too!)

    The quality was awesome, IMO.

I had them printed at Officemax though, after I designed them all, because I didn't trust my printer! lol

It only cost me about $10ish to print 60 invites, response cards, directions, and tags.

So I think they turned out awesome! I am glad I didn't print at home though! PIA!!
