diy Harry Potter Inspired

Raysha, on July 30, 2018 at 4:24 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 21

My fiance and I have decided on a Harry Potter Inspired Wedding. Not going as far as cloaks and wands... Our colors are the house colors. Any ideas on some simple but unique DIY decor? We do not want it looking like a birthday party. My venue has decor available (greenery for tables, china etc). I just need something to give a potter touch. We are planning to have pumpkins and other fall decor as well. Our flowers are actually harry potter pages made into roses. And how should I do the tables. We are having 100 guests max. Mainly family and close friends so we are not doing a seating chart. I will have 12 rectangle tables. Im trying to figure out how to decorate them as well. I thought about doing 3 of each house... but it will look like a birthday party. Then I thought of naming the tables by either our favorite characters and decorate simply to them. IDK.

You could do the tables based upon the houses or based upon the characters..( Slytherin, Hufflepuff, Hedwig, etc) . You should definitely do a candy bar (if you can afford it) and have all of the little treats that were described in the book. Your seating chart could be like the Sorting Hat... oh, why aren't you doing a seating chart? 100 people is a lot of people to make it a free for all, regardless of if they're family or not.

First of all, I'd probably scream with excitement if I was going to you wedding. Harry Potter!

    1) Lantern with candles and old books make for nice centerpieces. If you use dark velvet table runners over white table clothes and you avoid obvious plastic decor then it won't look like a birthday party.

    2) I'd suggest assigning tables. This is so you don't end up with odd-numbered groups getting split up because there aren't enough chairs at one table.

    3) Please have three tables for each "house". You could pick three relevant locations from each house to name your tables after. (Ravenclaw Tables: Ravenclaw Tower, Albania, Room of Requirements; Gryffindor Tables: The Burrow, Godric's Hollow, Dumbledore's Office; Slytherin Tables: Chamber of Secrets, Malfoy Manor, The Forbidden Forest; Hufflepuff Tables: The Kitchen; The Greenhouses; The Library)

    4) You could do escort cards shaped like the Sorting Hat or some sort of envelope with the guests name on the outside and they open it to find a colored card and table number that they're at.

As you can tell, I'm a mega HP fan haha

OMG I love the idea of doing a Harry Potter wedding. I have so many ideas that are upscale and totally not birthday party.

So for the tables you could totally do candlelight and greenery like this picture.

I totally love the addition of the chocolate frogs as a favor. Something edible is always a plus and since this feels more upscale in general the packaging doesn't feel birthday partyish.

If that is too much I really like this table setting as well.

It still feels very magical but it doesn't scream Harry Potter at you.

You can do small things like this Harry Potter journal as your guest book. and just add a quill.

And my absolute favorite thing to add Harry Potter to your wedding are these signs for the Bride and Groom chairs.

I hope this helps you in your planning and Pinterest is a great tool for ideas if you can weed your way through some of the birthday party stuff.

I am including some Harry Potter elements at my wedding. We are using stacks of empty boxes that look like books as a card box, possibly naming each table after a Harry Potter location (i.e. The Burrow, Shell Cottage, etc.) and incorporating "always" or "until the very end" with the decorations. For photos, I am having the bridesmaids and groomsmen wear Converses in house colors. We have four people total for the wedding party. We also plan to take photos with the wedding party with each of the Harry Potter books with our officiant, who is a dear friend of ours, to make seven people. Our venue reminds me of Three Broomsticks since it's in a biergarten. We are also using seasonal decor that the biergarten will be providing like pumpkins. You can always have Harry Potter inspired drinks like felix felicis or armortentia.

There are a couple of other brides doing this theme! One in particular has REALLY nice Diy projects but I can’t seem to remember her threads or see them recently in the search bar. However, you can go here for all HP wedding inspiration:

Oh yes candy bar is a must, we are actually doing a candy bar instead of a grooms cake because he really isn't a fan of sweets besides candy lol. So me and my now 6year old, are picking out the cake. The reason for no chart is mainly bc everyone that's coming already knows everyone else lol actually now that I really think about it, it would be really neat.... we might just do that bc yhe sorting hat is such a cute idea

Depending on your budget, you could give a copy of HP as the favor. I bet you could find a ton slightly used.

Hi there Raysha!! I LOVE this idea. Love love love! Smiley love Have you figured out how you're going to incorporate Harry Potter into your wedding? If you can afford it or are having a bar, you could make a signature cocktail named after one of the drinks in the book!! Amortentia or Firewhiskey or Butterbeer, something like that! Smiley smile

This isn’t a decoration suggestion, but I think “Harry in Winter” makes a beautiful processional song, especially if you have a string quartet!! I love that your doing Harry Potter themed! So fun.

If you can hang stuff from the ceiling, floating candles could be a fun DIY (if you're into that)! I did this in my apartment for Halloween once, and it looked awesome! There are some tutorials online, I'm sure they'd be easy to find.

Whatever you end up doing, I'm sure it will be awesome! I love the velvet table runner idea that emcknight1517 posted!

I was thinking about that! We meet with our vendor this weekend. We are going to get all our ideas out there and see if she has any objections. We were going to get floating lanterns for everyone for a memorial ceremony, but she asked us to just do wedding party or just us bc of the chance of fire! Which that is completely understandable! I love the floating candle idea of course use fake candles lol I just don't know if we could do that

I actually was going to recommend doing each table a different house, like you said three of each one, but you could flip the colors so it didn't look the same at each table. To make it less birthday color like, you could do the table runners one color let's say ravenclaw for instance you could do a blue runner, with silver colored napkins, or visa versa. Then your centerpieces could be silver with blue hues. So lightly done, but not too over the top.

Also, if you want more subtle, for your centerpieces you could make them simple, yet add small harry potter figurines at table. I've seen someone do lego harry potter characters before. I'm going to use plastic guardians of galaxy characters at mine, to go with the centerpieces.

You already have some great ideas, just have to maybe doodle them out with some color to see what you like the most? Do what feels right to you.

You could make the favors Snitches with paper gold wings and a Rochelle candy! Use lots of dollar store unscented, differently sized, candles and you can find candle holders every where pretty cheap. I like the house seating idea. I would personally let your guest know which house they have been placed in by having a seating chart by going to the table with the sorting hat on top. You could cluster the tables instead of doing them in a row like in the book. See if you can get goblets instead of wine glasses. Use a scroll and an inkless quill for the guestbook. that would be a special purchase but it would give the whole thing a magically touch! you could do some cocktails that are a shout out to he drinks of the wizarding world. There are a ton of them on Pinterest. OMG! I'm so excited for this wedding lol! You have to make sure you post a ton of updates! I need to see this! OH! Sorry, I got another seating chart idea! You could also put folded pieces of paper into the goblet of fire! The book version is much smaller than the movies goblet so you could probably find something cool at a Halloween shop.
