diy Guestbook Alternative?

Kelsey, on May 15, 2019 at 11:04 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 13

I found a really cool idea for a guest book alternative for our wedding that FH and I both really like, but it costs over $200! It's pretty simple - a watercolor outline of the states we are both originally from, overlapping our hometowns with a heart, and guests sign around the perimeter of the canvas and it can be hung in our home afterwards. I'm thinking I can make it myself, so I bought a watercolor canvas and paint in our colors, and I'm planning to make a stencil with my cricut for each of our states. I do have a lot of experience working with acrylic craft paint, but not so much with watercolors, so I'm a bit nervous about how it will turn out. All of the materials cost me about $30, though - here's hoping it turns out alright! If it does, it'll cost about 15% of the one I could order online!

I'm doing this but with our places of origin like him for Costa Rica and me for Puerto Rico. I'm doing it myself tho cause I feel like it's pretty straight forward and honestly therapeutic in a sense. Beside its just an easy canvas painting, I can always just get another one cheap if I screw up and I wanna use it to decorate our apartment too hehe

My biggest concern is that watercolor doesn't always stick well to canvas, so I bought a special watercolor canvas from Amazon. I'm also a little worried that the paint will slide under the edges of my stencils. I'm planning to make them out of cardstock, but if that doesn't work, I might need to use vinyl or some other option that will have some kind of seal to prevent the paint leaking.

If it was acrylic, I could do it in about an hour - I've done these kinds of projects with acrylic paint dozens of times!

We did something similar! I had the same concerns about watercolor - I decided to go with acrylic and just use one coat of each to give it a more watercolor "look." I didn't use stencils on the paint, but used them to make a faint colored pencil outline in a similar color to the paint. Took me about 2 hours to get it on the canvas, then let it set, did some touch ups, added the black paint and was done in a weekend.

What I'm worried about it getting the right shape of our countries.... You can find stensiles of the states but I haven't found of countries at all... Or at least free ones lol

You can easily blow it up to the size you want and cut it out. Put clear tape on the paper to water proof it if you’re planning on painting with it. Otherwise I would just trace it lightly with a pencil and go over with a dark color border or erase it.

You can also water down your acrylic to get the water color effect - just add layers to desired level of opacity.

That's what I've been thinking but I want to do the colors of our flags which will be a bit more complicated. So I was thinking either acrylic or spray paint it with the stensils, to make the colors more deep and vibrant.

I’m planning to use my cricut machine to make my own stencils. If you don’t own one, maybe a friend of your does and can make stencils in the right shape and size for you?

That sounds awesome! I would definitely do some trial runs with the paint on scrap paper until you get the technique down.
