DIY garters!

Sydney, on June 30, 2014 at 12:42 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

Hey ladies! So I have decided that I am not going to spend 40$ on a garter set. Its ridiculous how much the price goes up as soon as you even mutter the W word. I'm going to make my own keepsake garter and a garter to toss. With a quick trip to the fabric store or Micheal's I can make both of them for UNDER $15!! BARGAIN! I think I'm gonna make my own veil as well. Am I getting to ambitious? I hope not! I love to save money anyway I can. Especially if I'm saving us 25 bucks just on the garters! Smiley laugh

If you are crafty and like DIY things, there's no reason you can't...just give yourself lots of time so you can make sure it's how you want it!

Hey if it's something you like and can do yourself and you can save money at the same time WHY NOT?!?! If only I could sew, I would make my own garter LOL. One of my friends made her own garter and omg it was amazing. It fit her exactly in her personality and her theme. Her husband is a police officer so she got a white garder, sewed it up, added pretty lace, bought mini handcuffs for $2, sewed them in and added a black and white police pattern on the inside and wow ... it was pretty awesome looking. I think it all costed her $5 to make. Weddings is the best place to show your talents, expertise and crafts if you have the time and inspiration and motivation!!

I'm pretty sure I'll end up making my own garter as well!

Do you have pictures of your inspiration? Or instructions? I'm not terribly crafty with a sewing machine but my FMIL is. Smiley smile

If I were you I would literally do it today! I got too close to our wedding date and still had too much to do and ended up eating the $40 for 2 garters (and yeah I know you can find them cheaper but it was pretty darn last minute lol)... great way to save a chunk of change!

Yeah check out hobby lobby before you do. I got my garter there. They often have a 50% off sale on wedding stuff. I got my garter set for only $2.99.

You can do it very easily... Like, SUPER easily.

Get some stretch lace, a few shabby chiffon flowers, a few rhinestones and you are good to go. If you want to do something a bit more glam, you can get a nice embellishment, too- grab a 40% off michaels coupon, and get one there. They are EXTREMELY easy to make. I make them for all my friends and made my own!

Here are a couple easy tutorials:

    http://www.diynetwork.com/decorating/how-to-make-a-lace-wedding-garter/pictures/index.html

Don't forget some double sided tape to keep it on. The lace is slippery, and even though it has elastic in it, the material won't stay up all night. I always recommend stuff like this: http://www.herroom.com/braza-1009-flash-tape.shtml?utm_source=adv&utm_medium=search&utm_campaign=pla&utm_content=Brz001-1009&kwid=productads-plaid^40430382309-sku^1067710-adType^PLA-device^c-adid^14481938349

Wow thanks for the idea! I wanted to do something like this too, FH is a HUGE NY Rangers fan so i was going to order a ranger garter but they're at least $30. I used your idea and ordered a plain white garter set and a pair of ranger earrings on ebay for $11!! Thanks!

That's so true how the prices appear to be doubled just because of the event! I too am making my own garter amongst other things. I did find garter belts on Etsy for $4.99 and you could just add your flower or other décor to it. But I'm sure these are sold locally too for about the same.
