diy for Destination Weddings

Christine, on May 3, 2019 at 11:08 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 7

So I'm a really DIY kind of person, and have always thought that I would DIY a lot of my wedding. But we ended up deciding on a really small affair with just my immediate family in Hawaii. So now I'm torn as to how much I can really DIY, since I would need to ship or pack anything I made. Has anyone done this, and if so, would you do it again? What kinds of projects did you do and do you have any tips?

I think you’ll need to skip because shipping costs would kill any DIY savings. We had a heavy DIY wedding 8 hours away and we PACKED 3 SUVs. It was kind of a nightmare.

I'm not so much concerned about the cost savings (because in all reality, DIY projects rarely actually end up costing a lot less than purchased), I'm more interested in the customization and personalization. But I hear what you're saying. That's why I'm wondering what people really felt was worth the additional cost and/or hassle once they DIY'd to get it to their event. Things like clothing or papercrafts like invitations and whatnot shouldn't be too difficult, as they'll either be used before we leave, or they can get packed along with the clothes I would be bringing anyways.

We're doing the same exact thing minus the DIY part. Our wedding will be ON the beach at Kiholo Bay on the Big Island. They have a lot of strict rules for beach weddings so we can barely have anything. The most we can have is loose flowers and like a small little table for like a sand ceremony and signing.

I’m in the same boat. I have lots of DIY ideas, but we’re planning an international DW. I think it’s doable, but you’ve got to pick and choose what you spend suitcase space on. I also suggest flying Southwest - every passenger can check 2 bags for free plus bring a carry on item (this will be your dress) and a personal item. My bridesmaids have already offered to use one of their free checked bags to haul wedding stuff, which is awesome!

Yeah, I probably need to figure out where exactly we're getting married, and what we're even doing for the reception before getting too nitty-gritty about the projects.

That is such a smart idea!! My whole family is going, so that would mean a lot more checked bag options and carry-ons to work with. And of course, by having all that stuff brought on the front end means we'd have the empty bag space for souvenirs on the trip back Smiley smile

Yea. Knowing your venue first definitely helps you plan better for what you can and can not have.
