diy flowers in advance

Mim, on February 11, 2018 at 6:04 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

Hi Everyone. I'm planning my NYE wedding and have been debating whether to do my own floral arrangements. Although I'm pretty handy/creative, I'm more worried about the timeline. For example, there's no way I could work on the flowers the 30th. And with it being christmas I could only technically do things the 26, 27, 28, 29 - but with that timeline maybe the flowers wouldn't last til the wedding. What are your thoughts? Is it doable for me to do my own arrangements or should I just stick with a florist?

If you were going with real flowers, definitely don’t do this to yourself. Go with a florist.
i am using fake flowers. My wedding is near the same timeframe as yours. I went ahead and bought the flowers already and sometime this year (hopefully in the next month) will start crafting all the bouquets and booteniers myself.
But don’t stress yourself out and go with a florist if you are going to use real flowers. You are already going to be stressed with last minute details - and Christmas right on top of it all. Plan ahead. Do everything you can early this year. Use a florist and delegate that task for your own peace of mind.

Did you find that fake flowers were cheaper than a florist? I was checking this morning and it seems that a lot are $5/stem which I think could add up to be the same. How did you decide to use fake?

I am using fake footwear as well- I found premade boquet sand arranged them myself at micheals. Pricing depends on how thrifty and patient of a shopper you are, if you wait for sales it will be cheaper. Jo Anns flowers are always on sale and every now and again 20% off coupons come out in addition to the sale! I bought mind at Michaels and it came to $10 each bridesmaids boquet.... I’ll probably get some more extra to make it fit the arbor flowers a little better but here is a quick picture-

You could try Bloominous. They send you all the flowers you need, with instructions on putting the arrangements together. And you can put them together in the 3 days before your wedding. They have good reviews and I was thinking about using them but will probably go with silk flowers. Bloominous.com.

Since you're having a NYE wedding, I would assume it's pretty formal. Therefore, I would hire a florist. IMO DIY and fake flowers don't go with NYE.

Don't worry about NYE. I'm a New Yorker and I get the vibe, but don't sweat using real flowers. Do what is the most stress-free and convenient for you. Like the other poster said, you will have so many last minute details right up to the wedding. Last thing you want to do is handle and assemble real flowers.

So much care and prep goes into making sure the flowers stay 'fresh and robust' throughout the day. Handled improperly it could go wrong. The oasis has to be soaked properly, stems have to cut a certain way. Many times they will use extra reinforcement you might not understand or know how to mount to each stem.

I'm not trying to discourage you. I mean if you are going to just stick some flowers in water the day off, it could work. But it's always best to do research to see what flowers are in season and what is required in terms of care, are they super thirsty or start to wilt if over watered. Now you could practice up with a few fresh flowers from Trader Joe's or something and see how well you do before it time for you to order the real deal, that would help you a lot so by the time you have to get your centerpieces together you'll already know what to do.

    or

You can remove your stress factor by going to Michael's or Hobby Lobby and get the better quality flowers. Make your move when they have a 60% off coupon. Use the coupon twice. Bring family members with you and let all them get in line with you and use the 60% coupon twice. Then hit two or three more Michael's and keep using the coupon on every single bundle or stem and you will make out like a bandit. Make a day of it. Buy beautiful tall standing candlelabra's or trumpet vases and mount the flowers high up. Stick with hydrangeas, viburnum bushes and roses with a little bit silver dollar eucalyptus. Don't pack the flowers, just use enough so that it doesn't look too sparse. You will be on trend and that combination seems to be easiest to assemble as an arrangement. You will have all the centerpieces done. Put plastic over them place them up on a high shelf away from sunlight and you should be good to go. You can also add a little scented lavender pack to them so they smell flowery when you take them out.

I also want to add there are so many different kind of faux flowers besides silk. You can use satin flowers, sola flowers, foam and real touch.

I’d hire a florist for a NYE wedding. That’s the thing when it comes to a wedding on a holiday, it’s very difficult to cut corners.

I imagine a florist would be super expensive because of the holiday. I’m doing DIY silk flowers from Afloral. They have rave reviews and apparently, the real touch ones look and feel real. I decided to do this because flowers are so delicate and my flower (peony) is not in season at the time of my wedding, so I didnt want to risk not having my flowers or something else with the florist going terribly wrong. This way, I can prepare my bouquet ahead of time to design it the way I like it, use it for my newlywed photo shoot, keep it for years after the wedding, and I won’t risk having the $100+ flowers I paid for wilt throughout the day (it’s going to be super hot on my day).

Exactly this. Having a wedding on NYE means you should go all out and have real flowers.
