diy Floral??

Any brides doing/or have done their own floral?? We plan on doing ours, and I have been YouTube-ing videos and practicing arranging on the weekends. We initially ordered a bunch of stuff from fiftyflowers.com but canceled a handful of it because it’s a lot less work to just go to Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods or the local supermarket and get the floral there and arrange it. It takes the stress out of praying that there are no shipping delays, and I’m going into different markets there is so much more of a variety and so many different greens to add! I’m still keeping some of the carnations and the roses I got from fiftyflowers, but i’m just so amazed at what I’ve been able to learn so far about arranging floral. Initially when we looked around for floral we were quoted anything between $3500-$8000. I can’t believe how much money we are saving by doing the floral ourselves.

Kudos to you! Our wedding was a destination event so DIY wasn’t really feasible—plus I am sooo not crafty! But both Whole Foods and TJs have such beautiful florals! My main concern would be keeping the flowers fresh the days running up to the wedding, but I know there are tricks for that.

What florals are you doing, OP? Anything beyond the standard bouquets and centerpieces??

We are doing our own flowers, but we did fake flowers. I did fake because it was cheaper and I could work on them little by little. Here are some of the flowers we did.

Https://youtu.be/oJdz1bY-IHg This is one of my inspiration videos. we’re keeping it pretty neutral and standard-ish, but then we’re adding dwarf pampas. They grow naturally where we live and there’s hundreds in my backyard. We found these large floor vases at home goods and they were so cheap so we got like 20 of them different shapes/sizes and we are putting the pampas in them all throughout the tent on the floor. We also plan on using Japanese Knottwood as our “table garland” fir the farm tables as we have an abundance of that right in our backyard too lol. We tested out the “scavenged stuff” last year to make sure that we were able to keep it fresh and what not and it seems like it was easier than regular floral to keep fresh. The pampas we picked Requires zero maintenance, and we picked a few in March and put it in one of the vases to see how long it would last, no water, and it still looks fine.

No way am I paying that much for someone to do flowers! Planning on doing them ourselves or finding a family member who can help out. My aunts will both be there and are a likely bet for extra, experienced hands to help out. I'm just planning on white roses, baby's breath, and rosemary with possibly one or two additions in the centerpiece arrangements to add variety. Will look into ordering online. I have heard Costco and FiftyFlowers are both good options. My local grocery store is hit or miss on the quality of the roses but I haven't checked out the Whole Foods to compare.

I had my wedding a couple of weeks ago and did my own bridesmaid bouquets (I chickened out and had a florist do mine, but in hindsight I'd have done my own). I loved how they came out.

A warning - I had planned for 2 years to use Trader Joe's flowers. They told me to call a month in advance, then 3 weeks, then 2, then 1 week before. I called them the Saturday before my wedding and they finally told me that due to the covid flower shortage, they couldn't take any orders. Outright refused. We called a million places and finally found a wonderful produce manager at this random Publix, and he ordered our flowers over the course of several days so we ended up with what we needed.

Now this TJ was in SC...I recall you are from RI. The TJ in CT near where I am gets flowers from a different supplier, so you might have better luck there.

I hired a florist to do the "personal" flowers (bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages) since I knew I'd be WAY too critical of my work to do it myself, but I'm ordering flowers from fiftyflowers.com to DIY bud vase arrangements! I figured I can't possibly mess up sticking 2-3 flowers into a vase lol. Also contemplating ordering greenery garlands from Costco for the ceremony pergola and rectangular reception tables (rounds will get the bud vases).
