diy Dress?

Rachael, on June 26, 2019 at 5:13 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 2 18

Has anyone on here made their own wedding dress? I've decided to make my own dress for the big day (the sewing itself isn't a problem, I've been sewing for 10 years) but I am trying to figure out when to start. I have my design all decided on but I'm not sure how soon to get started. I'm afraid of finishing/getting started too soon and then not fitting into the dress on the day of.

The wedding is currently planned for October of 2020, I was planning on starting the sewing in April of next year. Thoughts?

I think realistically you’re the only one who can say when you should start. I had a friend who had her mom make her a tutu for her senior year; it took almost a year. I know another person who made a tutu within a weekend. Both same quality, both similar styles.
Would it be better to give yourself more time, or do you think April is good? I think it should be fine!

O would start before that. Give yourself ti
e to fix things if you need to. Also if you end up not wanting to use it at all. You want time to get a dress.

Have you gone dress shopping? I’m sure you CAN design a dress but do you really want to? We did extreme DIY and honestly, there were a few projects that would have cost less money, stress & time if we just bought them. 🤪

Hey Rachael!! Welcome to the WeddingWire community!! It’s great to have you here!!

What an exciting project to undertake! Have you made an entire dress before?

I remember that I came across another WeddingWire bride who is making her own wedding dress that you might be interested in reaching out to! This is her discussion - The Journey Begins: Making My Dress!

From my understanding, she is getting married in November 2019 and started making her dress in March.

I hope you keep us posted with your progress, I’d love to see how everything goes for you!

Oh I hadn't seen her post! Thank you for sharing. I've made quite a few dresses in the last several years, and I'm very excited to make this one in particular. Hopefully she and I can learn some things from each other!

So but how is this constructive?...I think it'd be more helpful for you to give her any advice on pitfalls of DYIing.

My FS is making her dress with some help from her old mentor. Of course, we're getting married in two years, so there's waaaay more than enough time!

I think I was pretty clear on the pitfalls of DIYing: sometimes a DIY project is a lot more stress, money & time than it’s worth. We found this out the hard way. 😖

I'm sorry to hear you had such a stressful experience. I couldn't even fathom trying to DIY a large portion of my wedding, I'm really only going to be making my dress. It's something I've wanted to do since I taught myself to sew 15 years ago. If I didn't already have the skills and knowledge I definitely wouldn't be attempting it.

But thank you for the advice, I'll be sure to not pile my plate too high while doing this.

It sounds like you've got mad sewing/design skills and if it gives you extreme happiness to create your own dream dress, more power to you. Can't wait to see how it turns out! Smiley heart

My SIL did! She made it the week before her wedding. I wouldn't wait until thaaat late but I'd recommend making it close to your wedding so that it will fit perfectly without you needing to do extra work to alter it

That would be really cool actually if you could make your own dress.
Because I've found that sometimes it's hard to find a single dress with everything you'd ever want in it.

A very simple A-line illusion style dress, I just picked up all the fabric for it (lace and chiffon and silk charmeuse, I'm so happy with it!) and I'll be starting my mock up around mid-October, after I finish working on another person's custom costume order.

Well it's been two years since this journey started, and I've started and stopped and restarted this project so many times. But with my wedding just three days away I finally finished my dress. I can't believe it's finally done after postponing my wedding 3 times!diy Dress? 1

I'm getting married in 18 days so I've been here for a little while. Search diy dress and see what comes up. There's lots of posts but the women who do it are kind of far between in dates so they always seem to miss each other. See if you can find any ladies still here by searching for posts.
I considered doing this. It's going to take some time to fall in love with a pattern or a couple patterns and couple them, or even more time if you intend to make your own pattern. Then you will need time to find amd probably order the right fabric at the right prices and quality. Then you will need to cut your pieces. Sewing really would be the most straight forward part of the process. Personally if I were going to do that I would get to it as soon as you could so you had time to fix or change anything you didn't love.
It ended up being cheaper for me to buy a gorgeous 2nd hand dress on poshmark (I got a 2019 stella york with full bustle for $200! In perfect condition!) So I couldn't pass up a good deal In order to spend more money and time in hopes it would work out and I would love it. I'm not that experienced of a seamstress though, so you may be a lot more confident about it than I was.
