diy dress

Heather, on August 2, 2021 at 4:57 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11
My fiancé loves things that are unique and handmade. I love DIY projects so we work well together in that aspect. My wedding is in 17 months. Would I be crazy to consider making my own wedding dress? I'm not a professional seamstress but I can sew well enough. I also don’t want to just recreate one I see online, if I do this I want it to be a one of a kind but still look nice and not “Obviously homemade”. I need someone to talk me into or out of this, lol. Thanks

Unless you're a *very* good seamstress with a LOT of time to give to this project, I might think twice about it. Wedding dresses tend to be fiddly (from what I can tell - but full disclosure I am no seamstress)

I would buy a backup dress just in case!

I vote go for it and get a back up dress just in case!

I would go for it but have a backup plan just in case. I had a friend whose mom made her dress and it was pretty but we all spent the week before her wedding at her house helping hand sew lace appliques onto the skirt

You have plenty of time - give it a shot! I agree with getting a backup dress but I also do know someone who made her own dress.

There are quite a few ladies I've watched on youtube who have made their own dresses. Check out Loepsie! She speaks about her skill level, and also what her issues ended up being, but she loved her dress.

Honestly, I think it really depends how experienced you are, how much of a perfectionist you tend to be and so on. I definitely don't think it's impossible, but it is your ability to be comfortable with the end result that matters.

I love crafting - I knit and crochet, I have sewn one or two things, and I like to paint and draw, but I still wouldn't want to make my own dress.

🤣😂😁😁 I am a professional seamstress... .. and I bought my dress. I had a vision, and knew I could not recreate it, especially since I found the dress of my dreams (online) I do agree with the majority here - buy a back-up dress just in case.

Thanks ladies. I think I’ll try it but I like the back up idea. Luckily I’ve found a beautiful dress I can buy at a local store if needed.

My daughter is making mine from a 1949 pattern and doing changes as well. However, she is very skilled, makes corsets, her own patterns, and is going to go to fashion design school. She’s well prepped, or I would not risk it.

While the intention is good, I would leave this to the professionals. Special occasion fabrics are very expensive and not forgiving unless you have a ton of experience in formal dressmaking under your belt. A compromise is to work with a local seamstress to design your own if you want something unique. But make sure you try on styles beforehand to see what works and what doesn’t.
