diy dj

I'm having a very simple back yard wedding. Cheap and DIY. I can't justify spending 1,000+ on a DJ. Asking what other people did instead. What family members you appointed or what set up you had and what went wrong. TIA

I wasn't planning to have a DJ either so I was thinking I'd just borrow someone's sound system or rent one and then play off a Spotify list and have my brother in the beginning just time the first dance and grand entrance songs. But in the end I found a really inexpensive dj since renting a sound system was going to cost me almost as much as the DJ.

At first we didn't plan on having a DJ, just renting a sound system and creating different playlists for different parts of the event. Highly recommend Spotify. But I didn't want to designate someone to be responsible for DJing when they should be enjoying the wedding, and I definitely knew I wouldn't be able to give my full attention to it. We found a reasonably priced DJ who we LOVED from our first meeting, and we're very glad we changed our minds.

For the cost of renting a sound system, you could hire a DJ very inexpensibly. Especially since your wedding is more casual. Honestly, the weding day is for you to celebrate but the "reception" is for guests enjoyment. I'd invest money in things that I know will directly benefit guests. Like food/drinks/entertainment. You can definitely find a cheap DJ!

I’ve heard there is a DJ app but I’m sorry I don’t know what it’s called! I heard about it on the “F Weddings” podcast (amazing podcast, if you haven’t heard of it! Very helpful!). Also Spotify has premade playlists you can use, but if you don’t pay for a subscription then you will have commercials. That could ruin the party vibe, so maybe pay for it for the month of the wedding then cancel after? Good luck!

You could always make a playlist and just play it on random. Ask everyone for song suggestions, put them all on the list, and there’s your music. Someone you know should have some decent speakers, and if not they’re pretty inexpensive on amazon.
