FH and I are thinking about DIY catering if we find a venue that allows it. We do have a lot of guests but it would be a lot cheaper if we did it ourselves. We were thinking something simple like Spaghetti and Alfredo with salad and garlic bread. I have been to a wedding reception where they did this, so I know its not impossible. I also know that it takes a lot of time and coordinating, plus people who are willing to help to make this work successfully. I just know it would save a lot of money for us (which would be great because we have a smaller budget). What are your thoughts? Are any of you doing this or have experience with this?

No, just no! You are not a professional at catering. So, you THINK it will be cheaper, it will not be. You THINK you can make food safely (until some of your guests have food poisoning.

And now you THINK that no alcohol is another good choice. Oh no, just no!

Pasta stations are easy and filling. You may also want to consider catering meats then have family members bring side dishes. Of course the style/theme of your wedding will dictate. Remember time is money so calculate total costs. How will you keep food hot if you diy?

FYI, any respectable venue will never in a million years allow self catering. Never ever ever.

But you should definitely do this because it’s your day and that’s all that matters!

Why should the guests pick up extra costs? Why should they provide food for themselves and other guests?

Also to tag on to His Beauty, why are they paying for alcohol too?

I'm letting all of you know that are thinking about self catering, I got food poisoning today. I have been so sick I was crying, laughing on the bathroom floor and couldn't keep water down.

Don't take a chance on this for your guests.

One thing I considered was drop off catering from a local restaurant or caterer, which can significantly cut your costs, but you have to make sure that the venue or caterer provides the things you need to keep the food at the proper temperature.

I know you'd like like to invite everyone to your wedding but instead of 200, think about a smaller, more intimate ceremony with a guest list of 50, that you could properly host with catered food and alcohol. This would be a more enjoyable wedding for your guests than diy spaghetti at a dry wedding.

Without reading all the comments please Don't do this, catering with Italian or BBQ can be an inexpensive way to go instead

Please don't do this. It may save you some money, but you are just putting extra work and "coordination" on people who are supposed to be attending your wedding as guests. If you are worried about a smaller budget, you can cut the guest list.

Make sure your guests knows that it is going to be a self catered wedding. That way your guests and other people who think like me can save our money and just go somewhere else for spaghetti.

You know what's best for your crowd. I mean I catered for years and come from a family who cooks and would never dream of doing this, but you do you boo. You totes know what's what. So long as everyone is food safe and can keep 50 lbs of pasta at warm temps to serve when everyone wants to be fed. Awesome.
