We have a friend and his family doing a pig roast and broasting chickens for us. We are either making, purchasing, or asking family to make sides. The only things we're having "catered" is cake and beverages. We're hiring a baker for cake and cupcakes and we have someone setup to prepare and deliver all of the beverages we need in a cooled trailer.

For my brothers wedding we did the food ourselves, and it was such a nightmare. The food was great (my brother is a chef), but man the extra stress was insane! It did save them a lot, which by the time the day of rolled around, and we all had ate, it was completely worth it. It gave us all some great memories. This was for roughly 50-75 people, and the entire wedding party was helping.

Do you have access to a professional kitchen? Is there one onsite at your venue? Multiple stoves, ovens & refrigerators? It would be impossible to cook safely for that many people without a large kitchen.

I just don't see how you or any guest/family member would have the time to get it done and still be THERE for the events.

It took us every bit of the day to get ready and have the ceremony and even with a rather large break we turned right back around and went to the reception.

Well I’m going with family catering. My great aunt had suggested that we ask a few memebers on his side and mines to bring a big dish of what we have on the menu to help us cut down on our budget. Only thing is I know my family is willing because we have a lot a people on my mind that loves to cook but his side they really done like to help in that fashion

If you’re confident then go for it! We’re doing our own catering. I’m actually a chef and have a couple of chef friends helping me out as well as a bunch of family volunteers. Our family would be offended if we didn’t give them jobs to do Smiley laugh
My father in law will be grilling chicken and I also have a friend who has volunteered to do a roast pig. He has all the equipment and has done this plenty of times. I do have a plan B if we find we don’t have time to get everything prepared. There’s a great gourmet supermarket close by that do a good range of side dishes, salads, veggie platters, etc. As for food poisoning if you’re worried that whoever is preparing the food won’t have good hygiene practices then maybe it best not to do it.

I would personally hire a caterer just to give me one less thing to worry about on our wedding day

I come from a large hispanic family and my aunts are used to cooking large amounts of food, so my aunts are going to cook buffet style for my wedding. It will be way more cost efficient this way versus having a company do it. From what I have seen most people are against it on here, but my aunts have years of experience and have cooked for my cousins wedding and parties and there has NEVER been a problem with food being prepared incorrectly or food poisoning not only caterers know how to cook food correctly just my opinion 😊 so if you want to cook the food yourselves don’t let anyone on here tell you otherwise.

Where I'm from pot luck or low key catering is big. After talking to most of the guest that we know that will attend we decided to do a pot luck kind of thing. My parents are providing pork shoulder to make pulled pork sandwiches plus my moms homemade mac salad. When it gets closer to the wedding we will put a survey on our wedding website to keep track of what everyone is bringing so there aren't a lot of the same thing but we got some fairly good/creative cooks coming so I doubt we will have to much complication or complaints. My opinion is do what is easier on you and will make your day less stressful/worrisome.

I would never consider catering my own wedding. That's a lot of stress, for you, and your friends and family that would be helping. I don't want to put them in that situation.

My FH is an executive chef so of course he kept bringing up how the food has to be great and how he can do it so much cheaper but my biggest thing is that I didn't want my friends and family or FH to be dealing with the catering all night and not enjoying our wedding, So we compromised and we found a caterer that is AMMAAZZZING and offers Drop off catering.

Because of FH connections we are able to get amazing food without all of the extra expense. We hired 5 staff to serve and keeping the table clean as well as man the bars and buss tables. The food will be dropped off and our staff will serve it! Win Win!

TBH we couldnt afford this caterers "wedding package" so getting the food we wanted with out having to pay for their "wedding expenses" really worked out for us!

Yeah, I agree with NOT doing it yourself. That's a LOT of pressure and extra stuff for you to do right before the wedding... No thank you! lol

I have been wondering the same thing . I live in small town with not a lot of options and we have family who aren't in the immediate wedding party offering to cook for a wedding gift. Im thinking about it. Wow I Just skimmed over the feed ... let me know what you decided to do
