diy Blankets as Favors

Alexis, on January 8, 2019 at 9:34 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10
Hi all! So I'm having an outdoor ceremony in December, so I wanted to do blankets as party favors for our guests! Inspiration taken from a few pins with the caption, "To have and to hold in case you get cold!" We live in Arizona and are having our wedding here, so while it doesn't snow, it can still get pretty chilly.

The thing is, I have no idea where to start. I know I'd want to do two different fabrics, cut the ends, and tie them together so there's no sewing involved, and it's just really simple to put together. I just dont know how many yards I would need of each fabric for one blanket. I'm sure I could look it up, but I'm also not sure how many I should make? I've seen a lot of people do favors as a "one per household," but I'm not sure if this would work or if I'd have to do it by individuals.

I also have a back up idea for favors if this doesn't work out, and I have a lot of time so I'm not super pressed about it right now. Just like to be prepared!

I had blankets as one of my favors and found them for $4 at Walmart. I've seen another bride on here said she found some for $3. It might be cheaper and easier for you to just buy them. As for the number, I did them for the household with extra just in case. I figured some of the men wouldn't take them since they were wearing suits. I had 40 guests and purchased 25 blankets. I ended up having 1 blanket leftover - which I was so happy about because I forgot to buy one for myself to keep. It is now my favorite blanket to snuggle in when I'm watching TV. I also had other favors too (candy bar, customized ornaments, and a photo booth) so if this is your only favor, I would give each person a blanket.

I purchased blankets for our favors from K-mart (didn't even know they were still in business) for about $2.75 each. DIYing sounds like a great idea, but purchasing already made blankets may be cheaper and will save your sanity. We got one for each household. I've read on other forums that not many guests take them home at the end of the night, but we plan to donate them to a local animal shelter if that's the case.

I made my FH a blanket exactly like that for our 6 month dating anniversary and I used 2 yards of fabric, each side. So 2 yards for the Marine print and 2 for the plain blue backing. I didn't use any inside, just the front and back. It's SO warm and we end up stealing it back and forth when it's cold haha. But keep in mind that fabric can be kinda pricey. We wanted to make some for each of our families for Christmas, but it was much cheaper to buy them. Smiley smile

I’ve made a couple blankets like this before. They can be very time consuming between pinning the fabrics together, cutting all the slots, then tying. I would watch tv while I did it, but start to finish was probably about 2 hours.

If you're willing to buy them instead of making them, Academy Sports is another place to get nice fleece throws inexpensively (about $2.50 each). Check there in early fall when they have a fresh stock of a variety of prints and patterns to choose from. They're really popular among crafters who personalize them, so favorite prints may sell out fast.

I would determine what size you want for each blanket. I'd do a small throw blanket, it'll save you money. It might also make sense to get some clearance fabrics, and do a couple different kinds. I'm really not sure on the one per person or household. I'd probably make more than 1 per household. Maybe a 50" by 50"? Or 50" by 70"? I'd plan on maybe 6 extra inches on the end for tying. If it were me, I'd buy enough fabric for one to try and see if it works out!

Do you remember what time of year you found these?

Yes, it was sometime in January/February. I remember it was just after Christmas because they were on sale and I really wanted a Christmas plaid so these were perfect. I bought them online from Walmart.

I would definitely look around for finished product before I took on that task. I was able to buy some nice blankets from Ikea for around $5 each. Great part is they were already rolled up in the package, all I had to do was take that off and add ribbon.
