DIY archway

Kaity, on April 3, 2013 at 1:11 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14

I've found some very inexpensive fabric at Walmart. They had it in the $1 a yard bin so I ended up with 30 yards of fabric for $30! My venue is including all flowers because its at a sunflower farm. I get two medium size arrangements or one large so I'm going with the two mediums. I'm curious to know, did any of you ladies build your own arch? I've searched online and have only found pictures not tutorials. Any help is much appreciated! I want something along these lines, doesn't have to be bamboo or anything.

Look on your craigslist for bamboo. I know it grows in AL and it is being sold on craigs all the time.

You would strap it together in a square and then put legs down into the ground in the corners. Notice these legs have fabric around them probably covering some rocks or dirt.

If you don't put it in the ground or stake it out like a tent I am afraid it would be blown over.

PVC pipes! They snap together like tinker toys, so constructing the arch will be super easy. You can either paint them, or wrap with fabric. They have burlap "ribbon" at hobby lobby that would also be really easy and cute. Just go to a home improvement store with that picture printed out and find someone who works there. Most places will even cut the pipes to length for you. Then you just need the corner connectors and some metal flanges for the base (heavy so they'll keep the structure anchored). Use wire or even better, small zip ties to attach the fabric.

Jamie took my suggestion of PVC. You can buy it from Home Depot. There's a tutorial for constructing your own photobooth backdrop that would be a good starting point I think. I'm on my phone right now, but I might be able to find it later.

That's a great idea! I was about to add that I can't put it in the ground since we are renting the venue, but it's going to be inside a pavilion so there isn't anywhere to really archor it. I want the fabric to drape kind of like the picture, not really wrap around the edges, but painting it could work!

I know this isn't exactly what you are talking about since you are wanting an arch for the ceremony, but this was our entrance arch to our reception. Like previous posters said we made it out of pvc pipe and wrapped it in icicle lights. My theme was winter wonderland, if you cant tell by the snow and the trees...lol.

Awww...thanks, Kaity! I put a LOT of work into my wedding. We actually decided to do an outdoor ceremony when we got closer to the wedding, but I live in South Carolina. I think it was like 65 degrees that day.

This is our DIY arch. Similar to yours Smiley smile For yours I bet you can get those from lowes or home depot. They almost look like the bottom of a tiki torch and I bet you could modify one of those Smiley smile Can't wait to see it.

I searched both building a garden arbor/arch and wedding arch on youtube...found some rocking ones. Ours is like 8 boards.

@Courtney How did you get the PVC arches to stay up? What did you use to hold them down onto the ground? I will be having an outdoor ceremony but my fiance, the officiant and I will be standing on a sidewalk. Not sure how to get the PVC pipe(s) to stand. Unless we dig them into the ground in the grassy area behind the sidewalk, but I'm not sure if they'll allow us to do that. We're getting married at the Shula's Hotel and Golf Club in Miami. This is the venue and what our ceremony area will basically look like...
