Disposable too tacky?

Megan, on September 6, 2017 at 11:21 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

Okay guys so I am getting married next year in July and I need some advice. So our wedding and reception are going to be super casual we're having it at a barn venue. My aunt has agreed to cater. I don't want the hassle of renting dishes and washing them if i go with a decorative disposable plate will it be too tacky? I'm not talking about your regular every day paper plate but an actual decorative plate. Just don't want to be too tacky. Suggestions? Thoughts?

Is your aunt a professional cater? If not, consider hiring a professional caterer to avoid any type of foodborne outbreak.

I've seen plastic plates that looked super fancy - I think it would be fine.

It really depends on the look you are going for, but for a "casual", "rustic" wedding, I think disposable dinnerware is just fine. We had it at for our rustic backyard wedding Smiley smile They make nice-looking disposable dinnerware, like silverware that looks silver/metallic. This is one of those things that I wouldn't stress too much about; as long as people have good food to eat, something to eat one, somewhere to sit and eat, and something good to drink, you're good!

ETA: As others sad, make sure you have a professional caterer though!

Fancy plastic plates are fine. I am doing disposable everything because there is no kitchen at my venue.

We're also doing disposable (well, biodegradable, but same idea). There are plenty of options out there that look beautiful. A quick Google search will give you some ideas. Not tacky at all.

I found some plastic plates on Amazon that look so real FH had a heart attack as to what we were going to do with 150 plates after the wedding! 'Throw them away' was not the answer he was expecting! So even fancy setups can get away with plastic!

I've been wanting to ask this but fearing the answer. My caterer doesn't provide tableware and there is no kitchen so I was torn between doing this or renting glass. I have been despairing how to clean all those plates and silverware before we return them to the rental company. Not gonna worry about it now!

As long as they aren't paper Dixie plates that get soggy, I think it's good! We were actually going to go with the fancy white plastic with gold rim ones. Then our caterer said they could gather enough plates.

Ask the rental if you have to wash the plates? I ended up renting because they stated (and I clarified) they only need to be scraped clean. Which makes sense, I would hope a decent rental company would properly wash plates and silverware before renting them out again.

We're having food stations at my reception, and the plates and utensils are all the sturdy clear plastic ones that IMO aren't tacky at all. I'd focus more on the food itself than the quality of the plates. People will remember if the food was very good or very bad, but they won't think twice about the plates.

I think plastic is fine no one is going to remember what plates you've had.

That's what I plan to have. I don't need nor want the extra clean up.

I'm using disposables. I bought plastic heavyweight plain white plates and gold disposable silverware. My caterer charges an extra $300 to clean dishes on top of the $400-$500 I would have had to spend to rent china. No way.

We are having BBQ and we are going to have heavy duty white oval plates, our caterer provides them and says they are a huge hit with brides.

I don't think this is tacky. But if your aunt is not a professional, that is! Don't make your family work on your wedding day!

It's fine. But even if your aunt is a professional caterer, don't you want her to enjoy the wedding as a guest and not an employee?

Id be considered things might blow around depending on the venue. With that being said, there are some nice options you could buy. I would suggest taking steps to avoid an every day cook out feel. For example, no black garbage bags or yard garbage cans.

Following. My caterer includes the option for disposable for free, and gives options to rent dinner and glassware. I was hesitant and still kinda am; but the plastic does honestly look like real glass. I wouldn't do disposable cups and cutlery? Unless someone else has another opinion ?
