When should i change my last name?

Kyra, on July 11, 2018 at 4:14 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 6
Hi all! I am getting married legally August 10 in Wisconsin, then planning a honeymoon for October 19 (departure date) in Fiji. Nothing has been booked yet. Just wondering if I should start the name changing process before or after the honeymoon? I am not sure if there is a time period after the wedding when you’re required to have your name changed. Would love to not have to worry about any of it until after the honeymoon.
thanks for the help!

I’m getting married August 11th and also going to Fiji! We are going right away though so I will not be changing my name. You have as much time as you need to change your name. If it were me I’d just wait because I’d want to book things with enough time to spare (we JUST booked our Fiji trip and had a little bit of trouble finding the accommodations we wanted on each part of our trip so I wouldn’t wait till a month before like we did). I’d be paranoid about booking flights or anything before I changed my name.

I didn't change my name for years after I was married.

I think it would be good to wait just to make sure you can make accommodations & schedule flights in time. Otherwise you have to book flights with what your ID says and what if your new passport doesn't get here in time or something like that!

There is no hurry to change your name. In fact, I got married in December and I still haven't changed my name! So wait until after your honeymoon and just book everything in your current name so there are no hiccups with the name change process.

It took about 3 weeks for me to change my name legally just on my SS card. I suppose you could do your SS card, driver's lic and the passport in the same day, but you still have to wait for all of the documents to come back from these various government agencies.

I'd wait until after so everything matches.

I would wait until your return so you aren't stressed about getting your passport back in time! There is no hurry, no deadline, etc. In fact, some people like me never change their names.
