What is one thing you cannot stand about FIL?

AshMar, on June 23, 2016 at 6:52 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 36

Is there anything that you just cannot stand about any FIL?

My FIL's are amazing ! I love my FMIL and FFIL. They really are just great people BUT one thing about FMIL- she is just a TERRIBLE cook. I would never have the heart to tell her. She cooks with WAYYYY too much salt, eggshells always seem to be in her scrambled eggs, her mashed potatoes are extremely watery and soupy, she over cooks her meat, she doesn't add ground beef to spaghetti (she adds a meat, I just have no idea what kind) There are times when we are all at the dinner table and I just have to swallow my food. Don't get me wrong, I am still in the process of learning how to cook (I have a few plates down pretty well) so maybe I'm in no place to say she cant cook when I'm still learning myself, but FH and I don't live together yet .. He still lives at home and I still live at home, but I am counting down the days until I won't have to eat her food as much as I have to now.

I love love my FIL's... I just don't like how when they are talking like a normal conversation they always have a very aggressive tone. I get that's just how they are but still.

Lol well, if thats that bad, you don't have to "count down the days" until you don't have to eat it... You or your FH could offer to cook or treat everyone to dinner Smiley winking

My MIL is great and we get along really well, but I'm not that sure my FIL is that ecstatic over me. We are two totally different types of people and he keeps second guessing every choice I've made pertaining the wedding. Other than that smooth sailing.

My future father in law is very old fashion. He talks down on women . We need to submit to our men and never have an opinion .

My FMIL just likes to always have attention on her, she is very big on making everything about her and it can get kinda old! Love them both but it can be aggravating sometimes, because she'll cause drama just to get attention and FFIL just sits there and watches her

Oh wow OP. My ex's grandma refused to let anyone make their own plate at her house. So when we would go over before events (Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthday dinners, etc) I would always eat before hand because I wanted to be able to say "I already ate"/ "I'm still full." Her food wasn't good. It wasn't bad but (esp on holidays) I expected better. Then she would give servings that were way too big, and I hated to offend her by throwing most of it away at the end of the meal. After a couple years she caught on and asked why I never ate at her house. As for my FILs they are pretty great, and for the most part support me fully, don't give me any problems. Hopefully once the wedding is over it will go back to the little interaction we had before (see each other 1-2x a year and no phone calls to me personally).

Overall we get along well but they have a different family dynamic than mine which took some adjusting too. I'm very private and they tell each other everything!

My mil is wonderful in many ways and I love her. She said I was the daughter she never had. That being said, she is socially awkward to the point that she comes across as snobby and standoffish. She honestly hates people.

ETA: she is also very judgmental. And can't cook.

I can't stand that my MIL drops in for visits without calling first. I work from home and she does this all the time. She does not respect the fact that I have work to do and deadlines and to meet. She thinks I have all the time in the world to chat and have coffee with her. I have now started to not answer the door and I don't care.

My FMIL seems to ask me questions about the wedding with the purpose of contradicting me or putting my/my and FH's ideas down.

Her: what is your bouquet going to be like?

Me: nothing dramatic, maybe gerbera daisies

Her: daisies?!?! You can't have daisies!

Her: are you having a sit down or buffet?

    Me: we're leaning towards buffet

Her: a buffet will never work...

Her: are you going to wear your hair up or down?

Me: I don't want an up-do. Down is more me

Her: Oh no no no! You can't wear your hair down on your wedding day!!

It comes off as so insulting and none of my decisions are good enough. Gah!

@FFW omg yes. She gives these huge ass servings. She finally caught on that I don't like big servings (with FH fam, there's only him and his brother. On the other hand, I'm one of 5 so I'm used to smaller servings) but then once I'm done with my food, FFIL will PILE more on to my plate (when I didn't ask for more) like -___- I know he's trying to just be nice but then they get upset at wasted food.

Oh and same here. I ALWAYS try to eat before coming over.

It took forever for my future in laws to warm up to me. According to FH, they don't understand the concept of dating (his family is Indian). We had been together for 7 years when we got engaged, so it felt a little ridiculous that they didn't see our relationship as serious. Since getting engaged though, they've made a much bigger effort to make me feel like a part of the family. We get along okay in general, but I just can't shake the feeling that they don't like me given how long they acted cold towards me.

@Jessica L That would drive me crazy!

I've been dating my FH for 11 years, and I've known his family for all of those 11 years.

I've never gotten along very well with his mom--she is so cold and distant, very unlike my own mother, and very unlike me.

Our families live about 2.5 miles from one another, and in 11 years I can count on one hand the number of times his parents have accepted an invitation over for dinner, or a holiday celebration. They have never made any effort to be cordial to my mom, and I can't help but think it is because they think she is "beneath" them in some way...It's gotten better now that we are engaged, but it is still a tricky relationship, to say the least.

I love my FILs. My mil and i agree a lot on most everything and my fil is super funny and basically how i imagine my fiance being in 30 years. Right from the beginning they welcomed me and my daughter like family. They had all 4 boys so my mil says that im the daughter she wouldve hoped for.

I love my FILs. The only thing that bothers me is that I'm a planner and they're not as much. Something I have to get used to.

My inlaws are very kind and mostly respectful of boundaries, which I'm really, really thankful for. And they're both good, hard working people.

I've always had a good relationship with FIL, but MIL and I are like night and day, so even though we have a good relationship, there's things I do that make her cringe (like making DH attend a pride event with me), and stuff she says or does that makes me cringe too.

My MIL is pretty awesome. The only complaint I can think of is that she's kinda gossipy, but we just make sure we don't tell her anything we don't want people to know about, and it's all good.
