Wedding on a budget...

Anethia, on March 28, 2017 at 4:16 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

I am assisting a friend with planning her wedding. And we've accomplished a lot but she wants a lot of guest but doesn't have the budget. I know I can arrange a great reception at an affordable price. But where the issue comes into play is the ceremony. If we chose to go to a place that will allow to host both ceremony and reception we will exceed her budget. Not big on having a church wedding either. Officiants are not to difficult to find but, would guest be willing to travel from one venue to another. Any suggestions?

I mean, my guests will be traveling from one to another, so I see no problem..

A lot of places you can do ceremony and reception in the same space, the venue staff move tables and arrange chairs during cocktail hour. Its done all the time. Or they dont, I've been to weddings where everyone sat at their tables for the ceremony

If she doesn't have the budget for the amount of guests she wants, she needs to prioritize and cut her guest list. Maybe then, she'll be able to afford a place to hold both the ceremony and reception. From my experience, it isn't easy to find a ceremony-only venue. Even churches are more expensive than you'd think. I agree with @Chip -- it probably wouldn't be difficult to hold the ceremony in the same space as the reception.

As for whether or not guests would be willing to travel between venues, that just depends on the distance between the venues. I personally wouldn't mind as a guest, unless it was more than 1.5-2 hours apart. I live in a giant city, so that's just my personal idea of what is too far.

If the venues aren't too far apart it's fine. The only other thing is I do think you guys are planning it backwards. You set the budget then find the venue and caterers and their per person prices then you know your guest count, not the other way around.

If you can find a pretty space nearby that has seating and parking it's totally fine to have them in different locations.

I don't think guests would mind traveling as long as they aren't far apart. I agree with what @FutureMrsComo said. Budget first, then venue then you can figure out how many guests she can afford.

Look into government-owned land....such as city parks, state and national parks. Oftentimes you can find a city willing to rent you a pavillion spot at the local park for a couple hundred or a state/national park will rent out a little amphitheater for around the same price.

Seconding what @AyEmVee said about city/state/regional/national parks.

It's fine to have people travel from point A to point B, but key things need to be in place; food, alcohol, music. Makes some calls for those things, get some pricing and THEN back into the guest list.

If something as relatively reasonable as having a ceremony onsite is blowing her budget, she needs to be doing some rethinking. If it's anything over 15 people, even a public park is going to require a permit and then IF she can rent chairs and a sound system, that will cost too.

I don't think traveling is an issues I've been to a lot of wedding where the ceremony is separate from reception I think that's fine but leave enough time for guest to dr there. Or you can make morning ceremony follow by evening reception but cost more for morning snacks or cocktails time

Most of the weddings I've been too I've had to travel from point A to Point B. Never found it a issue. Most of the travel has been at least 10 mins away

Inviting a lot of guests when you don't have the budget to do so usually means a lot of compromises. Curious? How are you cutting costs?

My venues are in different locations (not by my choice, but y'know). It's really not a big deal if they're not too far apart. I'd say a 20 minute drive maximum.
